Teenage racer jailed for four years over woman's crash death

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west...

A teenage driver has been jailed for four years for causing the death of a grandmother while racing at up to 140mph.
John Gribben, 19, of Ayr, was sentenced to a further two years for dangerous driving two months after the fatal accident.
Joan Price, 59, died in a head-on crash on the A77 in Ayrshire last January.
Logan Knox, 20, is serving a five-year sentence after he admitted causing Ms Price's death by driving dangerously.

This incident was local to me and I must admit that sentence really is a joke, especially considering both tried to do a runner after the crash.

Is that the maximum sentence the judge could give? Because if it is, that is really st. Both of these brain deficient morons should be in prison until their mid-30's at least. frown

Tragic.

But not racers on a racetrack, idiots on public roads.

Driving’s just not his thing. 10 year licence suspension minimum would be nice.

I'm all for motorists being given a fair break when they make a mistake. But I really don't see why someone shouldn't get the same sort of sentence that they'd get if they'd shot someone. It's not really a "mistake" is it?

I love 'brain out' Fast and Furious type movie stuff, but I do wonder how much monkey see, monkey do, when racing on public roads in portrayed as cool and edgy and completely free of consequence.

4 years for killing someone, and also doing a runner and leaving them dying in the wreckage without bothering to try and help frown

Core reason why I detest the F&F film series.

I think Death by careless is max 5 years

Death by dangerous max 14 years

CPS might have bottles it and used the careless charge to guarantee a successful prosecution

Me too. The glorification of reckless driving in F&F only encourages the knuckle-draggers in society to emulate them.

Dangerous driving really needs a review of the sentences involved. Absolutely outrageous.

"John Gribben, 19, of Ayr, was sentenced to a further two years for dangerous driving two months after the fatal accident."

Exactly. Should be up to the jury to decide whether in the face of the evidence it was a mistake, or whether those involved were tempting fate. The charges are seriously outdated and need an overhaul to start dishing out some actual justice.

i'm confused as to actually what happened?

car 1 - golf gti - is tailgated by an A3 and overtakes a lorry
car 2 - slower a3- can't get past lorry, get frustrated and decides to go a really dangerous overtake and kills someone

car 1 - 2 years in jail
car 2 - 5 years in jail

right?
