Surely this can not be a good thing. We already have laws against most types of offensive and abusive behaviour, I don't see how creating a new category of hate crime that only men can be found guilty of is a good move.

If you can be charged with a crime for saying something to a woman that you wouldn't say to a man, that is going to open up lots of silly accusations.

You probably wont even have to use any derogatory or rude words to be found guilty if this becomes a thing.

I can see a scenario where a man might get annoyed with a woman and say something along the lines of 'You stupid woman, you nearly killed me FFS' and it would be treated exactly the same as using the N word is today.

I don't see why you couldn't get in trouble if you were overheard talking to your mate about how much of a bh your girlfriend is being. Some activist type could make a complaint against you for misogynistic language.

Women of course will be allowed to be as offensive as they like to men and call them all the names under the sun without committing a 'hate crime'.

There are groups in our society that are culturally misogynistic, I wonder if that will be addressed?

As a non-misogynist person I don't care about this. In fact I think it's a good idea. Nobody is going to come and arrest me because I'm not going to say anything misogynist in the pub or anywhere else. Anyway, can someone actually be arrested for saying the "n-word"?

All the stuff they were really upset about is covered under existing legislation anyway.

And while we're at it will the law be written to cover misandry too or do only poor delicate wimmins need protection from abuse aimed at their gender?

The OP doesn't appear to understand the proposal - although to be fair the reporting (and MP proposing the amendment) uses the word 'crime' too casually.

The proposal isn't creating an offence of 'misogyny', the proposal is to allow existing crimes / offences motivated by misogyny to be an aggravating factor for sentencing.

The only hate crimes we have are specific racially / religiously aggravated offences.

The Home Office doesn't appear too keen so I imagine it won't be accepted.

It depends on the context / intent / circumstances

If I am talking about language associated with slavery and the impact it has on modern society in a lecture, then that's wholly different from going up to black children and shouting the word at them.
