I read this some weeks ago and it's now been confirmed that all cars are very likely to be fitted with speed limiting technology so they won't be able to break the limit without an annoying buzz/sound/explosion/water pistol fired at the driver or whatever in the cabin

Looks like my new M5 might just be with me for some years to come then smile

The Independent said:
Speed limiters will be fitted in all new cars from 2022 following a ruling by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

This agreement was reached after a proposal from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) was presented which said that the software could reduce traffic collisions by 30%.

Intelligent speed assistance (ISA) uses GPS data and passing road signs to determine local speeds limits and can then keep a vehicle below that limit.

Motorists can currently override their ISA by pressing down hard on the accelerator but the ETSC would like to change that.

They recommend that if a driver remains over the speed limit for more than a few seconds, audio and visual warnings would be activated until they slowed down again.

A proper on/off switch should also be implemented to “aid public acceptance at introduction.”

The Vehicle Certification Agency which approves cars for use in the UK says these rules will apply here post-Brexit.

Included elsewhere in the ETSC’s proposal was the call for data loggers to be fitted into all cars and autonomous emergency braking systems to be kept mandatory.

“This is a landmark day for road safety. We now urge the final negotiations to take place as soon as possible, so we can make this step-change for road safety a reality,” said Josh Harris, director of campaigns at road safety charity Brake.

Surely this has been on the cards for a while now - I'd have thought insurance companies would drive this with the black box devices by then. And once autonomous cars take over, honing will be gone.

If you want to speed constantly go to a track. They are great fun, generally with friendly staff.

I do not really see an issue with cars and bikes being kept to speed limits. Should really assist traffic flow and save many serious injuries to adults and children.

And great wealth and prosperity for all. I've heard they'll even order pizza.

There are much bigger issues to deal with on the road.

Measure & control what is important rather than making important that which can be measured & controlled.

............and no one ever crashes or gets hurt doing the speed limit or less. rolleyes

When this dictat doesn't produce the utopia of zero accidents/road deaths then we are just a few steps away from banning non autonomous cars..............nono

I would rather money be spent on driver education. As a businessman travelling many miles per year in my opinion it's the number of people who clearly have forgotten how to drive and be considerate to others on the roads which is more of an issue.

Inappropriate speeding outside a school is far worse than 80mph on a clear dry motorway for example.

Very safe when the GPS loses signal on motorway for a second, thinks you are in 30mph zone and sticks on the brakes for you...

(As one "whataboutry" example!)

Of course they do.

There is an interesting statistic about death rates in pedestrians with cars travelling at or below 30 and above 30. It is not linear.

Autominous cars will be great. No worries going to the pub, Few or no accidents, traffic jams reduced.

If you want to race about go to a track. There are loads about.

Perhaps you need to look at why you need to travel. There are trains and taxis. Added benefit of being able to work whilst travelling.

Not all drivers are in control of their vehicles even below 70. It’s an unnecessary risk to other drivers and their passengers to speed.

All these years of developing software for aircraft and much more stringent standards than for cars, yet they still manage to crash due to software issues

IMO autonomous cars are not the panacea people seem to think they are.

That's wonderful for you, but to go from my home to my parents is 3hrs 30 mins by car, or 5hrs 40 mins by train.
From my work in Bedfordshire to our office on Tyne and Wear is 4hrs by car, or 6hrs 20mins by train.
From my work in Bedfordshire to our office in Paddington is 1hr 30 mins by car, or 2hrs by train.

I'll stick with the car for now.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are people who work for Network Rail based out of London who haven't managed those numbers.

The rest of us would be let go for never arriving before meetings had finished. Not to mention divorced.

Not yet but with Moore’s law still going full steam it won’t take long until they are much safer than Jo Bloggs driving.

I assume 1 person in the car to work? How selfish is that not to mention the pollution.

Why do you need to travel to different offices?

What freedom ? UK motoring is the most over controlled in Europe.

Fortunately, the Germans know the difference between being forced to
drive slowly and driving carefully. They will not accept this limitation.
Both Mrs Merkel and the German transport minister have spoken in favour
of no limits on the autobahns.

If the UK authorities have any sense (which they mostly haven't in this area),
then they would get the UK driving test up from the easiest in Europe
to the European average.
