People really cannot accept blame anymore these days.

Woman who started wine o'clock at 5pm every day ends up with liver failure yet she blames the drinks industry for not informing her what a 'unit' is?

FFS!!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-48576460/latest-h...

I'm saddled with an alcoholic ex wife who still has the kids and she will blame everyone and everything but never herself. Bloody drunks.

Sorry folks, just had a very busy week away working with constant calls from the kids about 'mum being drunk' as well as horrible drunken texts from the fektard herself.

Saw the above on the BBC News site and thought 'What the actual Fek!!'

Oh! and before anyone says what am I doing about it. I have basically given up my life and moved into the attic of the marital home as a lodger to try and help out. It is driving me to the very edge.

Feking Drunks!! I hate them!!

Not a valid excuse. Yet the BBC reports it with earnest sympathy.

Drink Aware and the like have been ramming alcohol limits at us for decades. Nobody who can read English has any excuse for not knowing what's recommended and what isn't.

My wife is in the whisky industry. One of her ex-colleagues at a company she's since left was drinking something like grain spirit straight on the job and ended up partially losing sight. Blamed the employer.

You can probably guess how that one went.

Agreed, but it's an area where society can be very unforgiving and hypocritical.

For many people it's perfectly acceptable to:
- have a glass of wine with every meal, or...
- have a glass of whisky before bed every night, or...
- go out every Friday/Saturday night and down a few pints, or...
- have a couple of pints with your lunch every day..
etc etc...

And for a lot of people they wouldn't blink an eyelid at someone doing one of those regularly, and see it as perfectly normal. Most people don't read the guidelines, they just go on the basis that it's "ok in moderation". The problem is people's definition of moderation can be very different.

So whilst someone who exhibits some of the above behaviours is accepted by society, woe betide the person who goes on to develop health complications from it - all sympathy goes out the window - should have known better, know when to stop, etc etc...

That is a very harsh thing to say Eric.
Whilst my ex wasnt an alcoholic she was a hideous, manipulative, borderline psychopath who absolutely had to be the centre of attention and used to create crisis` to gain that attention. I was stuck in the house with her for 9 months (on my solicitors advice) before I gave up and moved in to my parents boxroom luckily my kids were small enough to share a bed when they visited and I ended up sleeping on the floor as there wasnt even enough room to use an airbed. I still dont know how I got through that alive. Croyde is in a stty situation through no fault of his own, I cant imagine how much more difficult it is having an alcoholic ex on top of the "normal" ex madness.
The lady in the original article is stupid, how she could think that drinking every day was ever going to end well.

We've all been told very clearly, hundreds of times, what 'moderation' actually means. 14 units a week.

Most of us consciously ignore it (myself included). This lady ignored it too, but now claims she never knew in the first place.

I've all the sympathy in the world for alcoholics - it's fibbers whom I've less time for.

I have done everything in my power Eric, and as her ex I have taken her to docs, hospitals, rehabs, spent money, lost one girlfriend but there is no way I want to lose the lady I'm with at the moment. As everyone I know says (and her family), she's not my responsibility but, the kids are. My milk of human kindness has been evaporated and as many can agree with, the biggest victims of alcoholics are their close family and friends.

Don't need to be told to exercise some common sense!

A friend of mine lost his father to liver failure a few years back, taken into hospital feeling unwell and given weeks to live from that point. Everyone was shocked when they referred to the guy as an alcoholic. Drinking 6+ pints a night was enough and he paid the price sadly. He wasn't a drunk but I think to most people more than 1-2 drinks a night (if that!) would seem excessive.

Sadly not everyone can be saved from themselves. Shame we live in a society where some people just won't take ownership of that!

Long ago I spent some years in the drinks industry earning an almost obscene salary & un-checked expenses at the cost of encouraging brewers to sell more product. My ex-employer thought it very clever to have invented the phrase 'young emergent drinkers' when creating a marketing campaign aimed at the younger generation. The drink was alcoholic but with the ingredient of milk highlighted as if to justify the morality.
In a lifetime in sales & marketing without doubt those I encountered in the industry were the most ignorant unkind selfish & rude, unless.... unless you were in the same Lodge if you get my meaning.
I once had to host a table that included senior executives of brewers & hotel groups at a conference where the entertainment was a series of boxing matches, the fighters being young boys. I hated & have always hated boxing & my immediate boss the sales director who was on the same table noticed my body language & facial expressions which failed to hide what I thought was the very disturbing sight of grown men enjoying watching young boys all of whom seemed to be wearing very short shorts. . The following day I was summoned to be told that in future I must better hide my feelings & keep my judgements to myself for seen to be sneering in front of important customers was not acceptable.
Needless to say I realised I was in the wrong job finding it difficult to tolerate the immorality of the industry despite the fat salary & nice car. When the company was re-structured I noticed I was offered a side-way move to another part of the country so took the hint & left. My best decision ever.

I think people may be more sympathetic if she said "Its a fair cop, I have been pushing the envelope on the sauce for
some time sand it backfired on me"

But its someone else fault, despite all the adverts on TV, "Drink Aware" and various tv programmes telling you that getting stfaced every day is probably not a great thing for your health and wellbeing.

All those celebs that have died over the years from drink, didnt put two and two together.

A can of beer in my fridge says 2.5 UK units, I dont know exactly what the guidelines are without checking, but I seem to remember 21 for a man spread across the week, so maybe 7 cans ? a quick check on the internet suggests its only 14 units ! not even six cans of delicious cold lager, and not in one sitting.

So, she is talking bks, not talking responsibility, possibly looking for a payout and trying to deflect the blame for her predicament, like someone I know having a crash in their car when driving in the rain and it not being their faul as their tyres were bald.

I can have sympathy for someone with an addiction, but nobody poured it in there,

pretty sure every single bottle says how many units the whole bottle is, and how much a certain serving size is. you have to be incredibly stupid to understand what the word unit means.

but you hear this many times, people having 1 bottle a night and ending up with liver failure

A can in my hand says 1.8 UK units, yes yes I drink cooking lager and way more than I should. But you know what I don't really care.

It only went to 14 units recently (last year iirc). Before that it was 21 for men and 14 for women I believe. It’ll probably be 7 at some point.

Woman in the article must be a little simple. Bottle of wine is 9 units or thereabouts, always has been.

ive been in a high risk offender course and both women and men with alcohol issues blame everyone else. i was the only one who took responsibility.

She would have been over the limit driving her kids the next morning, who is to blame there.

Disingenuous. The "limits" were never portrayed as "this is moderate drinking", they were pulled out of someone's arse in the first instance, and they've been reduced repeatedly for political effect. Probably completely counter-productive.

That said, most people could guess that a bottle of wine a day is going to catch up with you. You just never know who or when. Some seem to live forever, and some don't.

My ex can polish off 3 bottles of wine in an evening and still function apparently without a hangover the next day.

Meanwhile myself, quite a drinker in the past, can't manage a night out on 3 or 4 pints without needing the next day off if not the day after that.
