It has, however:Punishment for using a closed lane isn’t new. Failure to obey a lawful traffic sign is an offence under section 36(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and you risk a fine of up to £1,000 plus three penalty points, or even disqualification. Until now, prosecution for ignoring a red X sign relied on a police officer witnessing the offence.
The gantry cameras will now do what plod could only do if they witnessed the offence.

Was the case just last week on the M25 - just past J18 / Rickmansworth there was a lane closure in 3 (aka "the fast lane") traffic was slowed to 40mph, then a crawl, but whilst arrows preceded the red X's there was loads of c*ckwombles just driving down the lane completely oblivious - driving right up to the Highways Land Rover parked in L3 and stopping, then indicating to move over.
It's mental that people can be so selfish.

Really, you are surprised at the level of entitlement displayed by many? It's mental that people can be so selfish.
On the other hand it is equally likely that the muppets just "didn't see" the multiple flashing gantry signs, illuminated red crosses, Highways Landrover painted with fluorescent stripes and fitted with bright flashing lights, because that would mean looking further ahead than the inside of the windscreen.

They'd have to look up from their phones...Seen a few instances on the M8 recently where an advisory speed has been followed by a red X on an overhead gantry without the usual move left/,move right arrow in between. Hopefully as part of issuing the fine there will be some verification that the correct sequence of warnings was shown before the X.

I think you'll find most of these people reside on Pistonheads, and are, in fact, the merge in turn experts.It's mental that people can be so selfish.

I think you'll find that they expect to merge in turn where the signage indicates that the lane closes. edit - ah - they ignored the arrows - well, if that resulted in them getting too close to the obstruction, the lane should have closed earlier.
