What possesses people to do this, obviously desperation, but are they so uneducated that they think they could survive such a journey at 35000 odd feet?

It's sad, but Darwinesque at the same time.

The poor sunbather must have been traumatised by this

A suspected stowaway who is believed to have fallen from the landing gear of a flight into Heathrow Airport has been found dead in a London garden.

A neighbour said the man fell a metre away from a resident who had been sunbathing in the garden.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he heard a "whomp" so he looked out of an upstairs window and saw the body and "blood all over the walls of the garden".

Because they think there is a hatch to allow them into the plane. Every single “action” film involving large aeroplanes has someone getting into the plane via the undercarriage...

Some people do survive, it’s pretty rare though.

A similar thing happened many years ago when I worked in Richmond, a body fell out of a plane and landed in the Sainsburys car park, it is directly under the flight path for incoming Heathrow flights.

What goes through someone's mind to even think that it's a good idea!

Or how bad is that persons life to feel that it's the best idea for them to do it.

Likewise, I was working on Terminal 5 in 2003/4 when the same thing happened, I don't think it was on the approach by in a holding position.

Bloody terrifying to think about freezing to death or hypoxia following take off.

Clapham seems a long way out for lowering the undercarriage, lowering when holding would be really unusual.

If the body was as reported, "a block of ice", how come there was blood all over the garden walls"?

The block would have shattered on impact and spread all over the place then melted probably ?

Less alarming than saying they get two a week.

Richmond is quite a nice place to work, I wouldn't beat yourself up about it.

My mate works for the Met Police and was the one who got the call about this on Sunday- not sure if he attended or not. But certainly pretty grim

As is mentioned in the article, the last time this happened was in Richmond, where one body was found on the roof of an office block, but the other person at the time was found unconscious, having survived the flight from Jo'burg in the wheel well. Clearly, it *is* survivable, but must be bloody uncomfortable, and you'd have to be desperate to try.

I also wonder, do the people know that the aircraft they are hiding in is bound for the UK or are they just taking their chances?
