Rochdale Market has existed for 768 years but is now being closed after 1 year of being ran by the Labour controlled council.

Since the mid 1200s or there abouts there's been the black death, hundred years war, the war of the roses, English civil war, discovery of America, discovery of Australia, industrialisation, colonialisam two world wars and the rise and fall of the worlds largest Empire to name a few...

Its survived all of these but succumbed to under 12 months of being run by a Labour administration.

Manchester evening news has Allen Brett, the council leader, quoted as saying

“We are not losing a market, but the market in its present form will not be trading.”

And they wonder why people are concerned about Labour's economic model....

I think to be fair to the council, it was already failing and they agreed to prop it up for a year?

Many markets are failing, blame shopping habits, peoples lifestyles, online shopping, Lidl et al.

Yes - changes in buying habits are clearly affecting physical stores, absolutely agree.

The same council are currently spending £80M building a shopping centre......
