Chinese Mayor found with 13 tons of gold and $20bn cash stashed away after a corruption investigation. That is some going!

I like the Chinese.

If I was king of China then I would abolish all prisons as I think that all people there are intrinsically good and shouldn't be punished.

If you're going to be corrupt, then do it properly. Careless not to escape before getting caught.

I wonder how much of London he owns, and if we'll ever find out?

They will be some good organs going there soon. They do not take kindly to that sort of corruption there.

Thinking that looks like possibility of massive pay off for such behaviour but big risks. He won't be around for much longer the Chinese do like a good execution. And even if he is innocent he's still in crap because hes brought the party into disrepute.

Got to question the accuracy of the report though, don't know what the largest note is in China but £30 billion in cash in £50 notes would be like 600 meter cubed pallets of cash.

His basement must have been big or some numbers have been mixed up somewhere.

Come on we all know you are the odd one out if you aren't a corrupt politician in China.

Yeah, but years before it had been drilled-out and loaded with lead by Nigel Lawson.

Lead's not nearly heavy enough but Maggie had a 1st from Oxford in Chemistry, she would have known to use tungsten!

It's widely speculated that North Korea drills out and 'tungsten's' a lot of gold. Of all sizes.
Is this mayor's region close to North Korea by any chance??

It won't be billions. Millions maybe. The largest denomination in China is 100 RMB ~ £10, so its limited by the physical size. Corrupt officials have been caught with rooms full of cash (sometimes paritially eaten by rodents) that have taken days to count with machines.

"Zang Qi was in office from 2008 - 2010"

And he amassed thirteen tons of gold worth £300million and £30billion cash! Don't execute him, promote him. He could turn around China's local government debt problems if he can generate income that quickly.

Unless he is one of the reasons for China's local government debt problem. In which case execute and repeat for other regions.

I thought 13 tonnes of gold would be worth more than that (not that 300 million is small change) but compared to the amount of cash found, it's relatively insignificant.

And had only been in post for 2 years. That's good going!

I make it about £520M from a quick Google of the current gold price (£40k per kilo) and some shonky sums.

The odd ones out are the ones who don't say 'how high?' when Xi says 'jump!'. He's only averse to corruption when it's being done by people who aren't on his team.

There’s a bit of creative reporting there.

Some cash found but majority of $30Bn was in bank accounts. Bank books and bank docs where found.

This chap has become a bit of a celebrity now. Sure he wishes he wasn’t smile
