End of Smart Motorways
Discussion
Cant find a thread on this interview so my apologies if its already here (apart from the "are they dangerous?" thread).

I wonder if this means that the existing ones will be removed, sadly I doubt it but would be wonderful if they are. Also, waiting for the head of Highways England to resign over the total waste of money of an obviously dumb scheme but that seems unlikely too.
Onwards and Upwards !

Interesting that SKY news use a picture of a scheme preparing for works, rather than one of a completed route in action that readers might have been able to learn something from.
The UK is not about to embark on building new Motorways - too many NIMBYs and Gretas about, so adding capacity to existing ones is the only game in town - especially when HS2 gets scrapped after the election.
A decent public information campaign is what is really needed. The public needs to believe that the technology works. If they genuinely cannot understand the signage, then they should not really be driving.

I would love to know what the baseline aim of smart motorways are, but so far, it `seems' as though it is to shut the motorways down as often, and comprehensively as possible.
Far too many times I have been in, and onserved massive traffic hold ups, which seem to have occured for the most spurious of reasons.
In a recent 7 mile tail back the `cause' was a Nissan Micra on the hard shoulder, with a flat tyre, .
In a more recent one (about 6 miles worth) on the M25 the `cause' was a Vauxhall Corsa being towed along the hard shoulder by a motorway patrol vehicle, with 3 more motorway patrol vehicles forming a rolling road block about half a mile behind it.
It seems as if they start their day thinking I wonder how many times we can stop the motorway and still get away with it, when their aim should be to keep the motorways running if at all possible.
What next, a 10 mile hold up after a car has shed one of it tyre valve caps? That is of course an exageration, but all too often it seems that `smart motorways are anything but smart where the prome reason for motorways is to get as much traffic as they can handle around them as much as possible.
