The M23 is closed after a 1903 car collided with a lorry with atleast one fatality of a guy in his 80’s. These cars always seem precarious- I didn’t realise they went on the motorways but a sad loss none the less.

Eta - turns out it was part of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run which explains a little more why he was there.

I think it was on the A23 just before it splits into the A23/M23 at Hooley. Very sad.

As much as I am a petrol head the speed/performance differential between them and modern cars is massive and other drivers have no appreciation of that. Drove a bit of the A23 this morning and it was pretty congested because of them so diverted off down side roads. Did seem an accident waiting to happen.

Apparently a top speed of 35 mph - unless properly organised it seems crazy - I’d imagine the Tour de France riders are faster than that.

Jesus , We met most of them yesterday morning when they set up in Regent street .Most came in trailers. Why a car of this age was on a motorway beggars believe .Now, I think back to a few cars of that age yesterday .Many of the drivers and wives etc (Few had some rather sexy women on tow !). Went for breakfast at Ramseys place (Heddon street Kitchen ) and Where very very friendly with my son .The women had such amazing outfits on etc . Chances are we spoke to the Person who has died :-(

I think it’s the full motorway - not an ‘A’ road -

That is a long standing and well organised road rally, I am surprised the route was on the motorway.

Sad situation.

Terribly sad

But, modern motorways are no place for vehicles of that vintage

There should be a minimum speed for motorways. In Ireland it’s 30 mph and in the US it’s 40 mph

Awful, I think there might be fatalities but I hope not.

I was watching them today as I live off the a23 in horley, and was actually sat behind 2 vintage cars as one attempted (and abandoned) an overtake on that very stretch of the a23 this morning as I was driving to Crawley.

Yes, they are precarious, but no more so than cyclists, and totally manageable with a bit of care all round.

It's only 1 day after all, and people do still get injured badly every day on the roads.

Sadly the driver in his 80’s has passed away, wife critical.

Very sad. Definitely not the A23 that leads to the airport then.

If it was a full on vintage car then taking it on the m-way would be scary as hell..though the run is often accompanied by other classic vehicles that might be better suited to them.

Also, the a23 route is signed up, and drivers are usually aware something is going on (the procession of RAC trucks fixing broken down cars is a giveaway) but I doubt truck drivers on the m23/m25 would ever expect to encounter vintage vehicles.

Very sad. Don’t the more ‘precarious’ cars travel is some sort of convoy, similar to a major cycle race (not that they would be on the motorway)?

Reports are that the driver left the official route, which does not include the M23, and that a HGV was involved in the collision.

The incident is definitely on the M23. The route is to follow the A23 (which really is not a “fast” road for those not local) south from Coulsdon through Hooley (all a 40 limit with traffic averaging far far less than that maximum anyway) onwards and southwards towards Redhill. At Hooley there is an extended exit peeling off to the left that almost immediately becomes the M23. That is the very beginning of the M23. It is not an existing motorway you join as you might on other junctions where a motorway is an established road.

I am not aware of a change to the official route. Maybe the driver made an error or decided to abandon the rally for some reason or another. Anyway, the official route should not carry these vehicles onto that stretch. While not in an official unbroken convoy the cars effectively run nose to tail anyway and on the official route are an interesting diversion to uninvolved traffic and no bigger inconvenience than any other road vehicles really.

A very sad incident and, of course, not so long since the route was diverted (officially) onto an A217 based route which included Reigate Hill and this incident;

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-41879...

Which became a fatality and was discussed at great length on these pages.

A very sad day for many.

A terrible incident in what is always a very enjoyable event to watch. Condolences to the driver's family and friends.

From what I can see in the local press, the car left the official route by taking the slip road off onto the M23, instead of carrying on along the A23 just south of Hooley.

This is my commute route home, and I have occasionally seen cyclists merrily heading down the M23, oblivious to the fact they have now unwittingly joined the m-way network. So the signage is not great, and the junction being on a slight bend, can "sneak up" on you, even at 35mph.

I've not yet read an explanation of how the car collided with a road works lorry (smart motorway being installed further down the m23) bit I don't want to be ghoulish, so will just end with adding to others' condolences to the family.

I went through some of my iPhone pics. Of the cars and people .But we left Regent street at 8.10am to go to Heddon street for Breakfast and the Rugby . By that time about 15 cars of that era had parked up and most of the drivers and co etc had decided the rain was a bit much and they wanted food and coffee etc . So many came in to Ramseys place. And WOW did they look amazing and acted the parts . Very very social people . Anyone know what car it was ?
