What would happen if nobody in a UK constituency cast a single vote?
If none of the candidates got any votes at all, would the sitting MP stay in their seat, or do all MPs have to relinquish their seats immediately before an election?
Ok, I'm in...If none of the candidates got any votes at all, would the sitting MP stay in their seat, or do all MPs have to relinquish their seats immediately before an election?

A few years ago when lots of new elected positions were being created Norman Lamont suggested that if any election got less than a 50% turn out then the post should be abolished. It seemed like quite a good idea to me.
It would have given us no Scottish parliament, no Police and Crime Commissioners, no London mayor and no MEPs. It would have also abolished about 70 seats in the (low turnout) 2001 general election, which would have been almost all Labour as far as I can tell.
What's not to like?
