Harrods restricts Christmas grotto access
Discussion
You have to have spent 2k to get in.
Now this won't affect me as I spend considerably in excess of that as of course do many others on here.
But it could affect less well off folk. On the face of it Harrods could be accused of being tight but on the other who wants some low yielding scroat sat in their ghetto who isn't going to spend much.
So on balance perhaps it should be implemented in other companies

Apologies for The Guardian link so here is an Express one also covering the tale:

Load of rubbish story. Its their shop and they decide who can come in . What the charge is and what the child will receive back etc in the form of gifts etc. So in effect the “charge “ to cover the event is covered by the premium amount the parents will be spending over and above the “walk in shoppers “ who may or may not spend at all. The gifts and photography etc might be very high end etc. if people don’t like it , let them go somewhere else “down the chain” . Brighthouse might do a grotto for £2.00 a week for 17 years .Free Polaroid and a cuddly toy thrown in.

You're forgiven David, on the basis that you appear to have forgotten the link. Edited to add that you remembered before I posted this. Now this won't affect me as I spend considerably in excess of that as of course do many others on here.

However [admission] I read Guardian articles more than anything other than the FT in order to keep tabs on the level of delusion amongst the lefties. [/admission]

I can see why they do this.
I bet the grotto visitors don't set foot in Harrods the rest of the year, and I bet it gets booked up super quickly when they open bookings.
That said, why not simply make entry to the grotto super expensive? This seems a rather convoluted way of doing it.

Breaking News!
Santa isn't real, and if he was not even Harrods could afford his day rate. It's a Christmas Grotto like any other, we've taken our kids to a number of them, at places like Paultons Park and Marwell Zoo. Some were great, some not so brilliant, but every single one was a commercial transaction where we, in our role as parents, exchanged money for an "experience" and a gift for our kids, and played along by suspending our disbelief to make the run up to Christmas as magical as possible for young children. It's nothing more than that. And there's a limit to how many people any one "Santa" can see in a working day, so there is ALWAYS some form of restriction, whether it be first-come first served, limited numbers of free tickets, or tickets that are paid for. Someone HAS to lose out. And boo-f
king-hoo. This time around it's the children of people who don't spend much in a posh shop what's pricing takes the piss anyway.
Oh, and don't tell the kids, but when we took them to Marwell the Grotto was laid out such that there were at least 3 "Santas" working three different rooms with three different sets of "Elves" to ensure that the queues were kept moving and it was all executed efficiently. None of the kids noticed, though, and all of them looked as happy with their Christmas Gift from Santa as we were with our mulled wine and mince pies.
And no, I haven't read the links so if I've got the wrong end of any particular stick, sue me...
