The UK has been called an illegal colonial occupier by Mauritius after it ignored a deadline to return control of an overseas territory to the island nation.

The UN had given the UK six months to give up control of the Chagos Islands - but that period has now passed.

Mauritius says it was forced to trade the small archipelago in the Indian Ocean in 1965 for independence.

The UK says it does not recognise Mauritius' claim to sovereignty.

The Chagos was home to the Chagossians, a Bourbonnais Creole-speaking people, for more than a century and a half until the United Kingdom evicted them between 1967 and 1973 to allow the United States to build a military base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos Islands. Since 1971, only the atoll of Diego Garcia is inhabited, and only by military and civilian contracted personnel. Since being expelled, Chagossian natives have been prevented from returning to the islands.
Very interesting situation. Never even heard of the Chagos Islands before this.

Likely repercussions for the UK?

It’s been British since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in the 1800’s

When Mauritius gained independence in the 1970’s the islands were kept by Britain

There is one reason .. the military base is of huge strategic importance.

No one lives on the island other than huge numbers of military personnel, it is in effect t a huge aircraft carrier slap bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean and is where the US keeps its fleet of strategic nuclear bombers

They ain’t giving it to anyone .. ever

It's a real disgrace how Britain have treated the Chagossians.

They were kicked off their land, and have effectively been stateless since then.

They have been dragged from court to cout to fight their case to return to their homes, which is all they ever asked for.

It is really ish of theUK to ignore this UN ruling, and yet another kick in the teeth for the Chagossians, who are completely blameless in all this.

yes

I don’t believe in apologising for historic issues that were generations ago, however this is a recent issue and it’s pretty disgusting that a country could act in such a way.

Maybe so, but do you really think the UK and USA are going to give up a highly significant military base? Wont happen...ever.

It's a shame the inhabitants were removed but I couldn't care less about Mauritius.

Nothing will happen apart from UN maps being redrawn.

They were in the news a few years a go. There was a load of displaced Chagos islanders living in Crawley apparently.

Could be a nice little earner for them if they get it back. There’s already a nice long runway at Diego Garcia. Just need some hotel companies to build a few resorts and you’ve got a new Maldives.

And they're already used to living near an airport.

Aren't those islands all supposed to be underwater by now?

No, that was Wales, New York, London, and the Maldives back in 2005

The whole is non binding so it'll just be another UN resolution ignored. As long as the Americans want it, they'll have use of it.

I'd just assumed the Maldives had disappeared beneath the waves. What happened to prevent that?

Local councils in this country put a load of bus lanes in just in the nick of time.

Corbyn's not only going to give them back, he's going to give them a ton of money as well.

Not a thought for their importance as a defence outpost.

It would be fun to see him try, the US would have him back tracking on that so fast his little communist socks would fall off.
