Just now. Massive. My guess is speed of sound being broken by RAF. Others on twitter heard it too

It was heard over massive area from Hertfordshire down to twickenham, and east London to west. Can speed of sound be that loud? Loads on Twitter are wondering if bomb or Bunce Field type thing. Or the Russians (lol)

My memory of it is it was quite “rolling” like thunder.

That was unbelievably loud. It sounded like a huge boom or explosion followed by the entire building shaking.

Another oil depot explosion perhaps?

Herts fire control are investigating after large number of calls. My problem is I don’t know what a sonic boom sounds like. If it is the raf intercepting either Russian encroachment of airspace (my theory) or to escort a jet or something, I suppose the info will be released.

Saw on Twitter a post about a jet bein escorted to designated airport that had no squawk/ callsign on an flightplan tracker.

Could also be bullocks. I would assume Sonic boom as heard over such a large area would make sense as jets pass over areas. or it's another bunsfield

update:

N725SHBoeing 767-300 lost communication, Typhoon fighters launched from Brize Norton.

seems was a QRA on a flight that lost comms but seems it got them back but was escorted to ground before that happened.

I do laugh at a lot if the Twitter comments saying the RAF is very inconsiderate and shouldn't be scaring people.

they don't go supersonic over London for fun! Folk should be happy they are doing the job they get paid for.

That's a relief......I was coming up with all sorts of likely and unlikely explanations for it and getting more confused but PH again comes to the rescue.
No chance of getting back to sleep now.

So what you're saying is we have a limited amount of time to make it look like we need new double glazing?

Twitter comments complaining are from the same idiots going into one about the police shooting that scumbag.

Still it’s nice that the RAF must have dragged either a couple of Phantoms or Tornadoes ( according to some tweets) out of retirement to wake them up.

Well couldn't they have at least warned people beforehand?

Does anyone else think this was organised by leftists to take attention away from the election? It all seems very suspicious. The RAF could have a lot to answer for.

These are likely a lot lower level flight at supersonic, so a fair bit noisier, but I remember a time when you’d go outside to hear Concorde going over.

It was the Paris-new York route and always around 9pm.

I’d find it ‘cool’ hearing these jets rather than complaining about it.

We used to hear it in Devon as it came over on the way to Heathrow... until a local complained and they slowed down sooner... even at 120 miles away you could still hear it. I can imagine how loud it was overhead...

So, you heard a noise?

So, you posted about it on that interweb thing!

So, what will you do when something actually happens?
