It's an often quoted phrase that "so and so would have made a brilliant prime minister" so who do we all think would have changed the face of Britain and British politics?

William Whitelaw, Peter Carrington, Aneurin Bevin, John Smith, Kenneth Clarke and Mo Mowlam spring to mind as some who may have changed the country.

By and large, people don't get the job as PM for a reason. That said, I think that it's a shame George Osborne will never be PM

Portilo is definitely a contender. If he had replaced Major things could have turned out very differently.

(Only just been able to post as the tears of laughter in my eyes from the Boy George suggestion have only just subsided...quite liked him when in office in coalition. Went downhill rapidly from there).

Michael Portillo as an MP was a different kettle of fish to the one we see on TV these days. Much as I like him now, I'm not convinced we would like him had he stayed in politics.

Oh no no, not getting the love for Portillo, a lightweight pretty boy.

What about the Kinnock boyo ?
