From outside (Australia) I'd be interested to hear some (hopefully informed) commentary on the election outcome & what it means for the UK / Brexit situation

Obviously we get some news here & can pick up online articles but would appreciate any relevant comments form the forum as an additional perspective

thanks

My gut reckons the appetite for brexit has increased over the last few years not reduced, especially given the spanking Corbyn got for being on the fence and barely mentioning brexit, whereas Boris hung his coat on brexit for the entire campaign.

God knows how considering how much of a clusterfk it has been.

a quick survey after the voting process would have been a good time to get the thoughts of the country on brexit.

brexit is all but nailed on now, with Boris' deal.

Just bought the plate "EU20 BYE" for £400, decent investment?

Do we expect leaving the EU to go through in 2020 or 2021?

Thought it was worth a punt. The plate has to be put on a car registered after March 2020 too, which might affect the valuation.

I think that this result is the one that Teresa May would have received had she not ran the worst campaign imaginable.

Her reasons for calling a GE were: 1/ Need a majority to push through bold or controversial harder aspects of Brexit and 2/ How can we lose to Jeremy Corbyn.

Boris has those same needs but basically folded his arms and said nothing (except Get Brexit Done), meaning he easily surpassed TM's effort.

Had this happened in 2016 I could have seen us with a Canada Plus deal with the EU. But seeing as Boris' deal is basically TM's dishwater deal with some tweaks it will be interesting to see if he fancies having another go at the Withdrawal Agreement, or sticking with his manifesto pledge to accept it and begin the negotiations proper.

Are you going to put that license plate on a car brand owned by an English car manufacturer ?

Cheeky little you.

Happy with my 16 plate at the moment so not buying a new car for the foreseeable future.

Might keep it, but got my eye on turning a profit in 2020.

Still early in the night but something an Australian probably wouldn't know: Blyth Valley is about as solidly Labour as it gets. If the Tories can win that despite a healthy vote for the Brexit party there are no safe Labour seats. It's as improbable as Crocodile Dundee ordering a vegee burger.

This looks like being an absolute annihilation for Labour in their core seats, and it appears to be entirely about Brexit, and it's been basically Conservation versus the rest.

Whether this is because the people of Blyth Valley actually believe in Brexit for its own sake or because they do not like seeing their vote ignored is anyone's guess now. But this is a completely undeniable mandate to leave.

Assuming it plays out nationally he will have a strong majority in parliament, which under our elected monarchy system means he has a very free hand in his approach to leaving.

However, that does not mean we will crash out with no deal in January. It means he can get his withdrawal agreement ratified, then start working on a comprehensive and permanent trade deal with the EU, and the EU can negotiate knowing that 1) there is now no real prospect of a second referendum or a reversal of the decision to leave, and 2) whatever deal is agreed should be ratified by parliament.

As a leaver I hope this means we can have an orderly Brexit and negotiate a decent deal, but if 4 years of this being the defining issue of our politics then there's a lot of slippery ground between here and there.

Fantastic result for democracy and we are the first EU member to defy and question the EU !! Ireland and others had to re sit the exam and then caved in ,
we had a lot of pressure from traitors ,misguided fools and useful idiots but it now looks like we are actually going to get our independence . I'm hoping to see stronger links with our old friends in the commonwealth and being a modern outward looking nation trading with the whole world without the dead hand of EU interference ...

Boris is no longer reliant on the ERG. He's used them now he'll cast them aside. Look forward to a centralist Boris, and a teeny weeny, slightly soggy brino.

From casual observation the new Tory MPs seem to be quite pro leave, I think the ERG has just got larger.

Bojo will no doubt get his deal through parliament. My prediction is that we will be trading with the EU on WTO tariffs in 2021 after the transition period has ended as I don't believe the government and the EU is capable of sorting a trade deal that quickly. Bojo and his pals have been very firm in stating they will not extend the transition period.
