Get's a bit too warm for me in Australia. Not sure I'd fancy tucking into a Christmas dinner when it's 45c outside.

  1. Blistering air mass from Western Australia will scorch inland areas and cities
  2. South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales will reach record temperatures
  3. Alice Springs will see its hottest ever December day on Thursday at 45C
  4. Residents advised to stay out of sun and protect themselves from hazardous UV

I cooked a Christmas dinner over there in 40 degrees - it was awful.

I've always joked that Australia isn't fit for human to live there (most of it actually isn't) if it's not the creatures that are trying to kill you, it's the weather.

In all seriousness, the fires recently have been devastating, not good at all.

I'd exchange that for the dull UK weather anyday. I love extreme heat, though I know a lot hate it. Christmas turkey is overrated anyway.

As it happens I found the Australian weather quite dull as there isn't really a distinct change in seasons which is one of the things I love about the UK

It also rains, a lot (well it did in Sydney) surprisingly there's more rainfall per year in Sydney than in Manchester.

Try being a a Bangladeshi construction worker in Qatar. They can stop work on the building sites when it hits 50 degrees but funnily enough it never quites gets there, at least officially. At 45 degrees they are out working in it.

I’ve got relatives out there it’s pretty damn sweaty at the moment. Far too hot for me. Nice in the winter / autumn.

I like the seasons too, but really relish overpowering heat. Quite fancy visiting Oz, especially the interior and Northern Territory. I like the idea of Cairns as well.

my son posted a picture of 51.2c on his thermometer, this summer just gone, he lives in Dubai,
When he was over here this summer in the middle of our heatwave of 30c he was wearing his hoodie, complaining he was freezing..

I know a few people around Oz. Some have said they've seen local temps above 50c...in the 1990's and 2000's.

I guess they're heretics.

It was 47ºC in Sydney in late December 2017. I had just left thank goodness. My son married a local girl in NSW just two weeks before. It and the flies make the place difficult for me.

I suffered 43deg in Kyoto a few years ago, and I suspect that was more painful due to the humidity.

Wjhy does the temperature outside being 45C matter?
If it's too hot outside, cook and eat Xmas dinner inside, with the benefit of AC.

I concur about the poor sods that need to work outdoors though. I've done fieldwork in the Middle East, where the official thermometer strangley stopped at 49.8 at noon, before the heat of the afternoon.

You may be right. My experience in summer in Japan is that it rains so often that the humidity is crippling at lower temperatures even than your example.

.
My kitchen didn't have AC.

Plus, a lot of Australian houses are ridiculously poor at keeping the heat out and for that matter keeping the heat in when it gets cooler, our house was freezing in the winter even though it was mild by UK standards outside.

My sister and her family live in Buxton NSW. This was the view from her daughters bedroom window two nights ago. They may not have a house left after Christmas frown.

The ground is so utterly dry the fires are just raging.

Was in 45C in Arizona but it was a totally dry heat, like opening an oven door. Was actually okay as long as you covered up and drank enough water. Couldn't handle the tropics.

Just had a weekend where every day was over 40. Was great. Sat in the pool drinking during the day, watch the cricket in the afternoon/evening.

Looks like high 30s for Xmas day. Loverly.

A 40 day is good during the week, as it means sitting in air-con at work, but then it's still in the 30s to hit the beach after work.

And this isn't anything new. It's always been like this.

We were there a couple of years ago in similar temperatures. The sea was wonderful and warm! Like having a bath biggrin
