US Space Force

Is this another USA 'Star Wars' (Reagan: 1983) sabre rattling program without any viability or should we be concerned this time?

I think it’s a case of doing it/getting prepared before the opposition. Macron spoke of doing similar earlier this year. It makes sense now that there is a push to get to Mars, private companies launching satellites etc. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-5087642...
There has been a US space force since about 1959. Since that time it was an integral part of the US Air Force. The difference now is that it, supposedly, will have its own personnel, government department, uniform, ranks, operational HQ etc etc etc.
Or maybe it won't.
It's not very clear how it will be organised or funded - and I'm sure as hell that Trump doesn't know (or care) either.

"No", is the answer you are looking for.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-5087642...
Another ridiculous attempt by Trump to divert media attention away from the impeachment reporting and/or any other criticism of him.
From your quoted article - "The launch of the Space Force will be funded by an initial $40m for its first year."
Jesus, you would struggle to build a single new hospital for $40m.
Every time he opens his mouth he goes further down in my estimation.

To put that $40 million in context, the US Department of Defense current annual space budget is $11.8 BILLION.
And, to put the establishment of the "Space Force" itself in context, it is NOT a new separate and independent element of the Department of Defense, as the US Air Force was when it was set up in 1947. The US Space Force is actually an internal division of the US Air Force. In effect, it is a rebranding of the US Air Force's already established space activities.
How the US Army and the US Navy are involved is not clear.
Other military US space activities, such as NOAA (weather), DARPA (military research) and NRO (spy satellites) all remain more or less as they are. NASA is also unaffected.

There are quite a number of resources already in space, communication satellites, GPS, spy satellites. Even George Clooney has one, so thinking about defending those assets isn't a bad idea.

They've been doing it for decades. The formation of a specific Space Force (which actually isn't specific) is a bit of window dressing.https://www.nme.com/news/film/george-clooney-nespr...

There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way we can get on with our happy lives is that we DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!
Yes, if any alien threat turned up we wouldn't stand a chance, and weaponising space will not end well for anyone.Just think where we could have been if we all collaborated on peaceful exploration and truly committed to getting off this rock.
