A British woman has been convicted for lying about rape.

Apparently she claimed she was gang raped by 12 Israeli men. She then withdrew the allegation, under pressure, she claims, from the Cyprus police.

She is due to be sentenced shortly.

Is this the one where there was a video that was leaked online or was that a different one?

Cypress seems to think a tourist industry is more important than an individuals rights. I hope they learn how wrong they are.

That is always my fear as well. These areas are pretty much 100% dependent on tourism and anything that causes the tourist industry problems is handled very carefully by the authorities. I'm not convinced the authorities are always that interested in getting to the truth in these circumstances.

How can a species of tree 'think'? Maybe it's related to JC's magic money tree??

I don’t see why everyone is up in arms about this. She had consensual sex with someone and was filmed doing it, his mates were pretty disgusting and kept trying to watch (that’s unacceptable) so she falsely accused all of them of raping her and admitted it. The admission may have been done incorrectly, but it doesn’t mean she was actually raped. She has had plenty of legal advice over the months since this happened and during the trial.

For those going on about tourism, that doesn’t really work when the British are a huge chunk of their tourist industry. Jailing a Brit for this would decimate said industry if what you claim to be true actually were true. Israelis wouldn’t stop coming (c240k tourists pa) here if some of their countrymen were jailed, nor will Brits (c1.3m tourists pa) stop coming here, because a young girl has been jailed. The British are far more important as tourists and are the top country for holidaymakers over here, they account for more than the next 4 countries added together

You seem to have a problem with anything that happens abroad, you’re off on one about the fascist Spanish police on the drowning thread and now off on a similar nutty route on this.

Just to add, she’ll probably get a fine of about £1000 and no jail time.

I guess the obvious question is how did filming her result in forensic evidence that proved sexual contact with 3 others in the group 2 days later?

Irrelevant. She made the whole story up. There was never a trial about the rape. The only trial has been about her making a story up, which is a specific offence in Cyprus.

Just to understand the logic.

She made up the story that was supported by forensic evidence.

The trial was about making up the story about being raped, but whether she was raped or not is not material in the trial?

Are you a Cypriot judge?

There was no rape trial, she withdrew the allegation. The only trial was for Public Mischief ie whether she was guilty of making the story up.

Her defence has an expert who says the rape could have happened, the prosecution had one who said it didn’t. Go figure.

It is that simple. It’s not difficult to grasp, if you want to.

Exactly this.
She sounds a bit maladjusted, &/or given crap advice. Wouldn't surprise me if she had originally gone with no-win, no-fee lawyers or similar, with the promise of her name in lights all over the tabloids & lucrative compensation.
Not much sympathy here for someone getting on the wrong side of another country's legal system; I think the Foreign Office would do well to quit interfering....

Of course, the motivation for people making sexual assault allegations. A stress-free process to accuse so many people in a foreign country.

Be worth it for the well-known 'no win no fee' criminal law lawyers.

Now I want to know what she was wearing. Probably asking for the the whole ordeal if you ask me.

Israeli media take on it: https://www.jpost.com/International/Mother-of-Brit...
I think she's dug a pretty big hole for herself, whatever she might/not have been wearing etc. - watch this space....

If the video I saw was of this incident then she wasn't raped. These boys seem to be idiots and maybe there should have been a charge of distributing the footage but this girl seems to be acting on bad advice.
