Living up north, life isnt a bed of roses, we have to contend with invisible traffic islands amongst other things.

That is dangerous, clearly. IN the middle of a ghost island but one with a broken not solid line round it, ie allowing it to be driven over is absolutely necessary. That should have a bollard on it IMO, illuminated would help!!

I drive past that island two or three times a week, it’s not as obvious as it could be but it’s certainly not invisible.

Observation is key, and staying within your lane is key. Extenuating circumstances can arise but lane discipline, observation and planning should stop this happening.

An exception would be an emergency vehicle passing a line of traffic but otherwise it’s an example of lack of awareness.

The bollard that was on the island decided it preferred a local hedge to hang out in.

From a quick read of the article, it sounds likes these happened in quick succession.

First driver is careless, hits island and then stops. Other drivers see her stopped at the side of the road and give her space, going over the dashed white lines and then hitting the island!

The council screwed up putting in various islands to slow traffic through our village, unfortunately they did not burn the lane markings off and several people destroyed their tyres at night following the arrows into new kerbs and pavements. Even when they did cover over the markings they used tar which looked just like the original markings at night with headlamps on as it appeared shiny and white. They ended up having to resurface the whole road.

Looks like it was put in without bollards, then got two added, which have a habit of going missing.

It is nothing new is it?, see examples like that often, however why were these people driving in the middle of the road?

In my area there are many speed bumps were there are no signs and the markings have been worn away a long time ago, at night and in wet conditions you can't see them

They built a pedestrian crossing island not far from where I work, but had yet to put the bollards on it, some whopper in his Subaru decided to overtake the car in front that was doing the speed limit; at some pace, needless to say they came to a halt not long after going sump first over the top of it.

There is a right turn filter lane a few yards up turning onto the old part of the A6 to access a housing estate which might explain why the bollards get taken out so often with people trying to jump the rushhour queue out of Hazel Grove but if you're driving straight on I don't understand how this happens.
It's hardly a bend, it's well lit and is well marked with chevrons so unless a driver is updating facebook status or texting I can't see how it's possible to drive over it. I may have answered my own question there...

Welcome to our invisible traffic island in Caernarfon. This isn't actually a traffic island, nor is it a roundabout (notice the total lack of give way signs/markings). It is what's known as a 'shared space' smile - people literally have no idea what to do when they approach it. Technically you can ignore the differently coloured tarmac which as far as I can tell is just to make it look pretty, and drive straight across. Many do this, and many drive around it. No serious incidents yet but plenty of close shaves.

Similar in Oxford by the station where there are two of these in close proximity
