As this question seems to be polluting some other threads, perhaps it's time to have a thread of it's own.

Thanks to the wonders of Twitter, it's pretty easy to trawl out examples of the worst kinds of behaviour - absolutely reprehensible, and all the more stupid for people embarrassing themselves on camera/online.

So, are the xenophobic groups taking advantage of the current flash points to tell their members that such behaviour is 'acceptable', are people independently coming to the conclusion that this is how normal people behave, or is this the normal background noise of idiots being highlighted through social media?

No.

You have an incredibly vocal 20% who occupy far left and far right who between them make a tremendous amount of noise on many social media platforms.

The sides tend to stick to their preferred echo chambers so these platforms become infinite loops of opinion re-enforcement and dopamine hits to the users.

It's drugs for dimwits.

The 80% of us that are left just wish that this 20% would shut up because this insanity bleeds into real life.

Tuna, with reference to your third para. Very sadly yes.

It is a minority but that minority is much lager than most want to accept.

Perhaps if you were to duck into some of the ‘local’ forums you will see posts and many agreeing with those posts that are quite shocking. Tracking is difficult as they are taken down reasonably promptly.

It’s said frequently that the UK is less intrinsically racist than many other countries

I would agree with this, particularly when compared with Eastern European countries for example

But there is plenty of low level prejudice in the UK in my opinion.

I do think that over recent years we have probably become a little less tolerant than perhaps we were albeit things are still better than in the days of the NF et al.

In many cases it’s less an issue of overt racism but more one of xenophobia, suspicion and scapegoating.

Birds of a feather though, I don't go into the local fora so don't join in with such things, the positive re-enforcement loops don't interest me, I look at Reddit, I look at Twitter and really don't want to get involved.

Life is too short.

I understand that but there is a rather unpleasant undercurrent in our society which seems to have been given a voice of late.

When people start complaining that they cannot understand the conversations of other passengers on public transport and imply it should not be tolerated , I consider that to be rather odd and unpleasant.

I would say much less as the years go by, I hope I'm almost colour blind having friends who are people of different ethnicity I also interact with trade with, feed me and who help me when I'm sick ,
I think we have more chance than ever to hear about the few Neanderthals who still fail to see people of colour as fellow humans,
because the internet reports the behaviour of these retards so we think its worse than it is ...
hopefully we will all learn to get along and not look at difference as a reason to dislike our fellow man ...
the UK is at the heart of the commonwealth and hence we have a wonderful extended family ...

Public transport !!! More fool them.

These people that you find so unpleasant are British citizens and have a voice / opinion / concerns. If nobody listens to them this is the inevitable outcome, the throw away 20% number from above is more than our entire bame population.

This. Travel a little, especially in Eastern Europe and you’ll see just how multicultural and tolerant we are, for what it’s worth. There’s just a minority on both sides who take advantage of the middle.

Racism is not solely about skin colour.

Intolerance and xenophobia manifest themselves more subtly han apartheid.

The problem with the modern world is that every window licker out there now has a platform. It’s easy to find stupid people saying stupid things because it’s all so accessible. And the stupid are on both sides - those who are racist, and those who find racism in any slightly ill considered word or phrase - see the recent Alastair Stewart frenzy for a perfect example.

A plague on all their houses is my view, as long as they all carry on wasting their lives on twitter and the like.

The U.K. is about the most reasonable place you can be in - try interacting with the Guardia Civil in Spain while in possession of black skin and you’ll see what I mean.

I think that is more a symptom of failure to manage immigration .. bit like having a party with a few strangers in the mix soon we all get to know each other and make friends or a least understand who they are happy times had by all, have a party gatecrashed and it goes wrong very quickly ...
