It seems like one good thing of the coronavirus might be that it makes people more aware of how serious normal flu can be. I had no idea it resulted in quite so many deaths every year tbh!

A few people have mentioned it's odd how normal flu is never discussed much, so I thought why not make a thread. (I suppose if other people, like me, never really realised how bad it could be then that might be part of the reason why it isn't talked about so much).

Also, there's quite a lot being said at the moment about hand washing etc etc... and how steps like that can help to prevent any virus spreading. So I was thinking, shouldn't the Government / NHS or whoever spend a bit more money on health campaigns every year - wouldn't it cost less in the long run if it means less people end up with flu in hospital...??

Anyway, just thought it might be useful to have somewhere for people to discuss normal seasonal flu, as well as Coronavirus!

25 million free flu jabs given out by the NHS, and if you don't qualify you can get one for £7 or so. Obviously, the vaccine isn't always effective, but is pretty good.

You could propose the NHS starts running a huge online advertising campaign, with massive ads on PH telling you to get a flu shot. Maybe they are already, but I wouldn't know - my ad blocker is ruthlessly efficient......

According to ITV...

"Public Health England told ITV News: "The number of flu cases and deaths due to flu-related complications varies each flu season.

"The average number of deaths in England for the last five seasons, 2014/15 to 2018/19, was 17,000 deaths annually.

"This ranged from 1,692 deaths last season, 2018/19, to 28,330 deaths in 2014/15."

Since October, over 4,000 people with confirmed flu have been admitted to hospitals in England with 70 confirmed deaths. " (6th Feb)

I saw articles a few weeks about how many people had died in the US this winter due to flu - it's been worse than usual and they've had two waves of it.

I seem to recall hearing in the UK that the flu vaccine being given is the 'wrong' strain - maybe it's the same issue in the US?

I know once I had moved out of the family house along with always being careful about washing hands and avoiding people who looked ill, I had a 3 year period when I didn't catch one cold.

It was pretty much unavoidable when surrounded by young school age children.

But even with the current situation I still see people sneezing and coughing in public without bothering to stem it with a hand or tissue, plus I still see people spitting in the street.

I suspect these people are the same lower IQ morons that have bought up all the toilet paper hehe

Vs 290 odd people with Wuhan Flu so far and 3 deaths. People who believe all the scary stories in the paper only have themselves to blame imho.
