Getting some cheap training, a bit of intel on how good our radar detection is, probably learning a bit about Typhoons. I’d guess they are fiddling with altitude and approach to see how quickly they are detected. IMO if we were smart our reaction would be nothing, so they’d learn less.

Flying a plane through international airspace... Defiinitely upto something dodgy. Why would they respect our borders and not enter our airspace if their intentions were dishonourable?

Think back to the training exercises in which SR71s were flown over Russia to be intercepted by Mig fighters - international cooperation is alive and well. This is no different.

what they want at home and what they want abroad aren't necessarily the same thing though. Didn't the Germans assists Lenins passage to Russia in 1917 specifically as they felt it would undermine the Russians?

From the BBC Article "while the third pair forced them to change course." I wonder how they do that?

And if they did'nt would they ultimately shoot it down?

It is different. The SR71 was the peak of technology at the time and the Yanks were showboating.

Sending an ancient Russian Bear towards Scotland doesn't really send the same message.

They could have at least sent a TU160 if they wanted to be taken reasonably seriously. That would have given the Typhoons something to think about (even if the TU160s are getting on a bit).

Sending a Bear does seem a bit tragic.

When they got back to UK base I imagine their conversation went like this.....

Started up on his six, when he pulled in through the clouds, and then I moved in above him.

Well, if you were directly above him, how could you see him?

Because I was inverted.

Here’s the Polaroid smile

were sr-71s intercepted by migs? I though its raison d'etre was that it didn't.

As for the tu-160 - does it have the range? Also while these games are deliberately provocative there's a step change between a subsonic aircraft that's a patrol and observation platform as well as a bomber, and a mach 2 capable aircraft whose sole role is heavy bomber, hurtling towards you.
