XR's actions thus far seem all to have been anti CO2, while showing a complete disregard for environmental matters which can be controlled. Perhaps they are now tackling something which actually matters:

"Protestors from environmental group Extinction Rebellion (XR) have perched themselves in centuries-old oak trees that are threatened with being felled to make way for a new path.

The four trees - believed to be around 300-years-old - are set to be felled by contractors as part of a Persimmon Homes development in Ixworth Road, Thurston.

The protesters have joined residents who are trying to protect the trees from being taken down, but Persimmon have said the construction of the pathway is necessary under the terms of their planning permission.

XR set up banners along Ixworth Road at the weekend, but have since begun protecting the oak trees around the clock to safeguard their future.

The group believe the pathway can be built further away from the road and not require the trees to be removed, a plan they argue would be safer due to speeding drivers."

How many drivers are currently speeding through the path of the 300 year old oak trees?

I’m amazed they can cut them down I thought they were always made to build around them.

Sounds like they are leveraging a local protest to get their name in the papers for something that won't increase negativity towards them.

Their objectives have never been environmental.

As for the trees, the planners need shooting.

Had a chat with some folk who had been helping XR with some of their recent "protests".
They were genuinely ignorant of the complete lack of support from Joe Public.
I put them straight. hehe

I'm no XR fan, but this seems like a worthy cause from just having read this thread and the BBC article.

I like the fact that they are effectively protesting against a cycle lane... there's a petition here;

XR are lots of little local grassroots groups. Of course they're involved in their own local issues. "Their objectives have never been environmental"???? Take off the tin foil hat.

Lots of people support them. Lots of people think they're misguided. Lots of people oppose them. The latter group are rather similar to the more hardcore members of XR in my experience.

Context: I live in Cambridge.
"Hardcore" isn't really a word you would use to describe the population.

My "bubble" encompasses the rich, poor, Tory hating Lefties, Euro hating gammons, young, old. Even the right on crusty crowd don't seem particularly enamoured.

This is a fair shout. Stroud has more lentils and spelt than any other town in the Cotswolds.

This is of course oversimplified bks.

Of course lots of them are anti-capitalists. That doesn't make them an anti-capitalist organisation. They're a loose collection of people who have come together to campaign for the government to take action on climate change. Nothing more nothing less. Why pretend otherwise?
