Although the global economy sort of recovered from the global financial crisis life didn’t exactly go back to normal. At least not in my experience. I was working for one of the largest multinationals before, during and after the GFC. Pre GFC there were lots of international meetings. Expenses were easier to justify. It made corporate life more bearable. We worked hard but were able to have some fun too. When the GFC hit that went out of the window and there was pretty much an internal travel ban. Life changed a lot. Yet when the gloom of the GFC lifted life did not go back to normal. The restrictive policies introduced during the crisis has become the new norm and although expense and travel policies were relaxed a bit, life was never the same.

I wonder what will be the hangover this time around? We are currently being forced to WFH. If that works well perhaps companies will finally make concerted efforts to push a much larger percentage of employees to work remotely (to save on building costs). Will
Companies that downsize their workforce because of the crisis reemploy to the same levels or will they use it as an opportunity to keep costs down permanently?

The next year or so will be interesting.
