This happens all the time, it's not news. I joined the RN in 1982 and it was routine back then.

There has been some commentary in the press that the Russians are using this crisis to wind up people, fits the MO. Online is the bigger threat I think.

I guess it gives the press something to write about, but do they really pose any threat just passing through?

Sending our ships out?

Why?

Someone educate me please.

Testing detection and reaction, sniffing the ether for radio and radar, tying up resources getting a few snap shots of sips for the holiday album?

Edit. That ship show on CH5 had HMS Duncan monitoring a Russian ship that they said went "quiet". Correct term?? Correct me if wrong.

Anyhoo, recent aircraft incursions have done the same thing, turn off the dohicky that says what is what to other airspace users. Seems a way to play around.

I’d guess they’re under that blue circle....

Despite what people may think, It’s not really standard for the Russians to drop seven of their fleet into the North Sea and through the channel these days. We had their knackered carrier bob off the north of Scotland around a year or so ago but this is a bit different.

A quick look at the shipping lanes suggests it’s going to be busy between Rotterdam and Dover if they get that far....

That circular track appears to be bang in the middle of the long-standing published UK AWACS Orbit Area 6 - if the Russians decided to sail directly underneath of it, that was helpful of them, but you might well have seen exactly the same track on the Russian Navy's day off.

Do they pose any sort of threat though?

They can't be spying, satellites can do that nowadays.

Isn't there an international shipping lane that goes through there?

I'm certain if they wanted to do some sort of major attack on us they wouldn't send boats.

As I said before, please educate me as to why we should be worried and sending our resources out when they could maybe better used doing something else at the moment.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek, I guess now there’s a Voyager circling off the east coast someone’s in for a busy night....

So far...

3 Hercules (2 usaf)
P8 Poseidon
A pair of typhoons loitering
Tanker has been up all day, started from Brize and went up off of Scottish coast doing racetracks for a few hours before moving south.

And a C17

Very nice.

Are the B-2 Spirit units still paying a visit? Or have they (pun intended) disappeared again.

Any chance these pesky Russians can come and take over useless supermarkets food deliveries service as I’m unable to secure a delivery slot despite being registered with three of them?

Doubtful !! they are too busy helping the Italians ..... maybe that's why they are in the Channel nothing more than taking the scenic
route ...

On my first flight, (mid 70's) we "shadowed" 2 ruskies up the channel.....guess it was our turn. For fun we masked out the Wasps call sign on the front and sides and pilot flew around the ship with the winchweight taking lots of picks......till a gun started tracking him....wheres Mother...lol.
Genuine question...it sounds like we play the game as much as them: is that a fair observation?
