The transport secretary has announced that the people should use public transport more.
I guess he has a chauffeur driven car at his disposal and therefore has never looked at the reality of public transport.

Due to the current situation I looked at timetable on my local bus stop whilst out walking. The times of the buses to the nearest town were 10.56, 12.56 and 14.56. This is for a location only just outside the M25 - commuter belt and not deep in the countryside.

Why do politicians make such uninformed proposals/comments?

Bus services here are weekdays only and infrequent at the best of times. A car, absolutely ANY car (inc. Trabant) is far better than public transport!

I'd use the train or bus more but the buses run every hour, don't go where i want and don't run after 8pm or on Saturdays, the train I would need to drive to and then its every hour, dirty, standing only and costs just short of £9 return to the next station. I can catch the train to Birmingham for the same price as Ryanair charge to get to Lanzarote.

Improve the service and make it cheaper and the trains more comfortable and I will use them more. By comparison, from Malaga airport to Torromolinos is 1.50 euros the trains clean, modern and on time compared to Cross Country.

It's more than an unrealistic idea, it's a genuine proposal to shift Government policy, have a read and see what you think!

Grant Shapps is a moron, something the entire world has known for many years.

The question is whether this is one of his own stupid ideas or if his strings are being pulled by another moron.

They have been coming out with these kind of proposals since 1999. In 2004 they published a transport plan to increase cycling and reduce car journeys. I am sure the number of cars and car journeys have only increased, can anyone correct me if I am wrong?

The public and market will eventually dictate the policy. Public transport being crap is not really my excuse, I like using my car, I and many others want to have a choice. I also know that in the event of storms, disease, unexpected trips, spontaneous errands (e.g. something plumbing related broke in your house so you need to quickly buy a part), carrying heavy stuff the car really is the king and many people realise that. Make public transport better and more attractive by all means and many members of the public will shift but obviously the proposals are to try and make cars less attractive through taxation and road space while public transport stays sh*t.

I have not read the whole document yet but I believe it said there will be opportunities for public feedback so keep your eye out and have your say! Don't let them use silly tactics to stop car usage. Demand a policy shift towards keeping our cars.

Public transport isn't a bad idea per se, it's just the provision of it as a profitable service when put on an even footing against personal transport makes it a non-starter for most.

Easy for those in the London bubble to preach, but the reality elsewhere is nowhere near as convenient.

Lots of empty buses driving around Bristol. Can't say I am surprised.

If they made a timetable that broadly worked for you would you consider using public transport?

Do you think you would benefit from 'good' public transport if the investment was serious and well implemented?

Yeah, sit in a mobile glass box with a bunch of other people all breathing germs out sounds like a good idea right now.

Perhaps we can make sure none of the windows will open and in winter it all steams up and in summer it's like a greenhouse.

What is 'good' public transport?

Do you mean it will be there whenever I need it? Will I be able to jump in at 1:42 AM if I need to get something from the local 24hr store when there is an event of some sort?

Will I be able to give my friends/family a lift if they needed or just pick them up from their doorstep when going somewhere to socialise? Can we say whatever we want without caring if someone else can hear us?

Will I have the entire space to myself or private areas to travel in that don't have traces of the previous user possibly increasing the spread of Coronavirus?

Will it let me easily carry large items if I ever needed without getting into someone else's way or someone else getting in my way?

Will it some how reduce the chances of getting mugged if you happen to end up in the "endz" by mistake?

Will it also be as much 'fun' as driving my own car?

Can I listen to whatever music I want? Can I adjust the heat to whatever setting I want? Can I avoid someone else's smelly food?

Will it be my own asset? Could I offload one of these if I ever needed some quick cash?

Can I control its direction as I please?

If yes then I will take that 'good' public transport.

I once needed to go to Tetbury, Gloucestershire, to collect a new car. I caught a local bus into Bath and walked into the bus station to ask what time the next bus to Tetbury left.

"That'll be 11 o'clock next Wednesday morning." Only six days to wait...

Or perhaps by 'good' it means that for those less precious than you, others can use public transport which will reduce traffic density and clear the path for you to command your way through.

Considering how much we on PH would benefit from quieter roads, it's incredible how much we push back against initiatives to make it happen.

When I work in the city the train is my best option to moorgate, i cycle the mile to the station. When.i worked in the wharf motorcycle qas faster and cheaper. When I worked in Wimbledon i used train and tube. When outside of London the car is often the best option and only made artificially more expensive by tolls and difficulties parking.

Quieter roads? You think you will get to stay on these quieter roads? laugh

Feel free to make public transport better and more attractive but doing so by trying to frustrate the motorists, trying to force them out of cars has failed and will continue to fail.
