Trades Still Able To Work In 'Lockdown'

The local kebab van was doing brisk business around these parts last night, and is apparently within the permitted businesses according to Ali the owner!!
Our local town market went ahead over the weekend as well - the organsisers had set out benches in front of the stalls to keep distance between them, and all payment was via card/contactless only. Plenty of one-man traders or those who live and work together able to sell fresh fruit and veg, fresh bread etc without needing to break the rules. In that respect I can't see how a takeaway food van is any different.
I've got a few bits on, building sites (quite low attendance 2 or 3 onsite) and I do a fair of garden lighting.
Although in general many customers are either distancing and don't want work done or with the uncertainty aren't making plans. The after effects of this will likely be worse than the lockdown itself, for me and many in my game.
As for the govm. assistance, I'll believe I'm getting anything when its sat in my account! (The whole "you might get something in 2 months" approach is pretty foolish if the idea is to stop you going out today...)

They all entitled to it as long as they had less than £50k profit last year. And yes they still allowed to work.
My mates self employed heating fitters are still full with work and will be getting £7.5k in June they got over £20k in their bank accounts as well and don’t even need it.
It’s a joke how it’s been done and we will all be paying for it for years to come.
My wife’s a nurse and doesn’t even get £2.5k a month and is risking everything.
The whole country should have been on a basic wage say £300 each person a month for food and everything else council tax mortgages and utility bills suspended for the duration.
As it is some can carry on as normal some are going to loose everything and others are carrying on with their wage but are front loaded with massive risk.

Whether a self employed person is working or not is not a factor in their eligibilty for the hand out.
I'm just wondering if at some point the Government will turn round to certain trades and point out that they never actually said they couldn't continue working?I don't wish to cast doubt on governmental motives as I realise the uniqueness and seriousness of the situation and that any help offered to the self employed is, in itself groundbreaking.
Our gardener called off last week. We were surprised as he is excluded and he would have been left on his own to do the work. His choice if he doesn't feel safe.
I think there is an arguement for having many trades for emergency reasons. How you can control that fairly isn't so obvious.
I wouldn't be using people to carry out things like bathroom or kitchen replacements. Most tradesman like that will be massively down on work I would imagine.

The law doesn't distinguish between essential or non-essential car journeys (or any other sort of journey) so long as it's for one of the permitted purposes.
Avoiding the ongoing debate about what is/is not essential car trips, I think he is missing a massive business opportunity. His business premises is mobile and he knows his regular customer base so why not operate like an Ice Cream van and let people walk to him to buy the kebabs (which are, I'm told, the best in the area!). Could even have a jingle? Any music suggestions I could pass on to him??pequod said:

We have a chip van here who comes to each street on a specific night and rings the bell...... I bet he is making a fortune.pequod said:

That's 40 to 50 living rooms that engineer will be in handling the remote controls etc per week per engineer.
Think of the possible chains of infection that could create.
I do pretty much the same job but on communal systems in blocks of flats and after my business partner came down with what looks like Covid-19 last weekend I've decided that the risks outweigh the benefits for me, my family and my own anxiety levels just to keep Sky TV working.
I'm staying home with the family for now.
Not getting any money from the government so just going to rely on my savings for now.

If the food poisoning I got from the death burger van I frequented as an undergraduate is anything to go by, CV-19 would be a merciful release in comparison...
