Thats because 30 million households are all ordering unnecessary crap at the same time and we only have half the usual number of staff.
In my area on Friday the mail centre ( covers approx 40,000 addresses) had to sort 90,000 parcels by hand over night and we cleared the lot and had them delivered the next day. I dont think thats so bad for saying we are risking of lives and that of our family so you can have a water hose for a tr6 ( that your not using) an evening dress ( that you cant wear at the moment) or 30 bottles of water ( because the tap is full of water).
Most normal rounds normally carry around 20 oversized parcels and 1 sack of small stuff as well as the letters and currently the average round has 150 oversized parcels 5 sacks of small stuff and the post. All delivered within 4hrs of postie going out and covering an average of 12 miles a day.

Anything sent via courier seems to have got here in a couple of days. Postman arrived today with half a dozen packages, most have taken around 10 days to get to us. Don't know where the hold up was and not particularly bothered as I expected things not to be as slick as normal.

I was wondering if there are delays/Overload in the big sorting hubs ? (if there are such things ? Suspicious that Luton and N-Pagnell are so close....main hub/s-center there ?
Like i said earlier we are experiencing a massive increase in parcels 90% of which are sorted by hand. With 25-50% less staff you can see that things will take longer than normal. On my round there are houses that are having up 10 parcels a day and on top of that Royal Mail are taking the excess that Amazon cant manage and we are also helping Hermes/DHL and Yodel as they cant cope either.
Parcels are being given priority but theirs so many of things ( most of which contain what we call not needed boredom purchases) that things are slower to come in and get processed. Theres even cases of trucks having to be parked outside for 12 hrs waiting to be unloaded because we cant physically get any more parcels in the building! The big hubs to give you some scale are around 5 - 7 football pitches big.

Delivery seems OK round here (Berkshire) - other than DPD losing stuff, but that's normal.
Post seems to be batched - we get several parcels all at the same time, then nothing for a few days. Fine with me.
Just had something overnight from Edinburgh, sub 24 hours.
Some areas with loads of staff off are running an every other day service but it is reviewed on a daily basis.Post seems to be batched - we get several parcels all at the same time, then nothing for a few days. Fine with me.

But many retailers have gone to online only services and are actively promoting customers to use them e.g. free delivery. We're rather torn because there are small businesses trying to survive this but that puts a burden on the delivery services.

We really arent bothered about working longer or harder we are happy to help, the bit we are concerned about is if every parcel is truly needed right now, we just want want people to think about what they are ordering and if that pretty bangle from china is vital to them at the moment!
Strangely I do not order bangles from China, just a specialist gear oil from Luton and a crankshaft sensor for an old Pug from Newport Pagnell

I sell stuff on Ebay, not too much and nothing "essential", maybe an average of 6 or 7 small packages a day that can fit thru a letterbox and don't need a signature. I dispatched one of these on 4th April by 2nd class (within the UK) and it arrived eventually on the 20th....16 days later to travel 200 miles, I could have walked the journey quicker
I realise there's some other pressures at the moment but if the Royal Mail is struggling with it's deliveries then this needs communicated at Post Offices when people are sending stuff. It's not like we are getting charged any less, and if a third of staff are self-isolating for a week each, they should all be 100% at work again after 3 weeks
