MoT Inspector gets 12 months imprisonment
Discussion
Would like to know a little more; how or why was he caught?
I'm guessing it may be the simple fact he passed an improbably high number of vehicles within the period - too high for them to have been inspected? Or perhaps the garage owner found out and shopped him?
Either way, good. MOTs are a serious business if you have the slightest interest in either environmental controls (how many cars do you see, belching smoke, where you think "there's no way that'd pass and MOT"?) and road safety.

I have always taken my cars to the council run facilities. No interest in selling add on’s they provide a black and white view of a pass or a fail.
As long as you do with enough time you have chance to take your car where ever you want and fix then get free re-test back at the council place

I would guess the latter. He only worked there for a month - he sprayed out a lot of MOTs in that time.I'm guessing it may be the simple fact he passed an improbably high number of vehicles within the period - too high for them to have been inspected? He was possibly testing vehicles that weren't actually on the premises.
A good few years ago a mate of mine who did my MOTs got caught by VOSA doing the same thing - I had arrived to MOT my supermoto and he had just minutes before been nabbed "testing" a bike that wasn't even there. The inspector had simply been sat nearby in his car, he knew when the MOT had been started so he then just strolled in "Where's this bike you're testing". Busted. Five year ban from testing.

The lads in Eastleigh are spot on: https://onlydomots.co.uk/Have used them many times for my car and family members' cars.
Top blokes. Will do tiny things like change a bulb free of charge. And will only fail if they have to. They never mess around. Nice waiting room and free coffee if you want.
If you are a DIYer like myself if it does fail on something they will take you out and show you on the ramp what it failed on - and even offer advice on how to sort it.
Cheaper than the council place as well.

Yes. Most of my vehicles are in warranty except for the toys.A good few years ago a mate of mine who did my MOTs got caught by VOSA doing the same thing - I had arrived to MOT my supermoto and he had just minutes before been nabbed "testing" a bike that wasn't even there. For decades, I've had all of mine done at the village service & MOT garage which is run by an old school mate. When he or one of his guys starts the MOT, the test kit is 'connected' to the VOSA computer.
Despite being a mate, he's always been straight with the MOTs. Never had a fail but some advisories which, TBF, were worth knowing about anyway. As they know me, they're happy for me to grub around under the car, checking things over when it's on the test ramps, which I always like to do, not having my own vehicle life.

It’s great when you find a place like that. We had a local one that was similar but ended up being demolished for flats. Have used them many times for my car and family members' cars.

All mot testing station are approved by vosa with the right equipment and bay also all testers are required to do a yearly test and can have a inspector come out at any time to check mot are done correctly. Also as the system is online its very easy to see if tester are bulls
tting the system. Most single lane testing station can do around 9-10 test a day so 50 a week and around 200 per month. Also tester past mot are monitered with averages of times/ pass and fail rates and what your failing on or advising. There is always cracks in a system but its a pretty good system.

I wonder how such places can make money? The one above charges £45 for an MOT, and, as they're timed on the computer, there's not much scope for becoming efficient at doing them.
How long does an MOT take on the computer? How much are they charged by VOSA to be an MOT station?

I'm fairly sure I read somewhere (possibly money saving expert) that any MOT test centre has to be test vehicles from the general public, some council centres are more open about this than others, but all should accept you.Personally Ive been lucky enough to find a private garage I trust.

I imagine if they can swing their custom to newer vehicles then it will take less time to test? Less time deciding/testing if something is a fail, less time entering the failure details, fewer people coming back for retests. I guess there would be some efficiency savings in setting up a workshop specifically for MOTs - there won't be extra equipment and tools hanging around so they can pack several ramps in.That said, yes, I'd have thought it would be more profitable to be run a garage repair service there and be known as trusted and reliable.
I now no longer do my own servicing, not even oil changes. I'll do a bit of greasing of locks and stuff, but that's about it.
I put my car in for MoT at the same time as my annual service and have done so for five years, all at the same place. The norm is that there will be one or two faults - my car is '06 - but often they won't charge for minor matters. This time I got a boot rubber replaced. They cleaned out a blocked rear washer I told them about - it merely dribbled, it's getting old like me in more ways than one. Things stop for no reason, then start up again as if nothing happened - for free.
They charge £35. I asked them how they make money and he said from those who don't care about their cars.
I've told my missus that I will not buy a newer car until the cost of a repair makes it uneconomic. I said this to the garage owner who said that they view cars like dentists view teeth; if they keep it going, there's always more money to be made on it.

"The ask an MOT tester thread." says 45 mins average. I think the MOT computer makes sure they don't do it too quick. How much are they charged by VOSA to be an MOT station?
No idea on the second point.
The Merc indie I use, a two man band, has just put all the kit in - dedicated specialised ramp and test equip etc. I don't know how it makes sense and I wish he hadn't done it as there's always a suspicion he's using it to bump up the average revenue per visit. He used to use a truck place down the road, which worked perfectly well.
