Rather off-topic I suppose. However, it came up on one of my F1 feeds.

I suppose it's wrong to travel around like that right now. But in fairness dead bodies in the street would be a reasonable excuse I guess.

On the other hard, given the size of his ranch the streets in question could be both on his doorstep and also a few km away from him..

What was he doing in Brazil?

Why wasn't he in lockdown somewhere?

^ he lives there, that farm place Brundle interviewed him at.

As for the title of the thread the first thing I thought of was tax reasons.

He's flown to one of his other pads, this time in Switzerland.

I'm not sure whether we're expected to feel sorry for him, or those dying in the street.

The rich do what they want. Us mere mortals are like dog dirt under their feet.

I mean, all those horrible, nasty, smelly dead people in the streets - I wouldn't put up with that either. I'd hop into my executive jet and flee to a tax haven too if I could.

He has the means, can make the arrangements, with a pregnant wife who will probably require a hospital birth in an area rampant with the virus, I’d say it was a sensible move on his behalf.

He will arrive in Switzerland without mingling with others in transit and self-isolate as is required by the Swiss regulations with his wife, who will hopefully have a greater chance of a healthy birth experience. Staying put in a more dangerous place because of what others may think is not an option when you are looking after your family and can change the risk.

Those that can do, those that can’t... get jealous and bitter at those that can I guess.

To each unto their means...

Quality of life wise Switzerland is probably a safer bet for him, so why not? Also pregnant Mrs BE and his age.

He's only in Brazil in the first place to enjoy some refuge from the corporate world and a good climate for a supremely aged duffer (also potentially legal immunity if required..). I can understand that dead bodies lining the streets might take the edge off.

I wonder what he did to help those in trouble in Brazil. For all we know, he may have done a lot - but this is Bernie after all.
I bet he's best of buddies with El Presidento as well.

We can't judge people's choices based on whether they also helped someone else. We all do hundreds of things a day without helping anyone else.

He's done something sensible for his situation - albeit something most others on that situation can't afford to do.

Bernie is of an era where not every last personal decision he makes has to be combined with a 'positive gesture' for PR purposes.

I guess I don’t really care about perceived friends too much or see the relevance of that here. With a pregnant wife and a disease ridden local hospital system, I would be out of there like a shot and worry about others as a second action if at all.

As you suggest, there is lots we don’t know about Bernie’s life experiences, including how he feels about global society after being mugged, burgled in the U.K. and having his mother in law kidnapped in São Paulo, the Mercedes team members held up at gunpoint in Brazil and all sorts of other stuff we may not hear about from his personal experiences of traditional Brazilian Sau Paulo “culture”. It isn’t the easiest place to live by all accounts even if you have significant means, you have to be quite careful.

Rule 1 in life IMHO is family first. I would have done exactly the same in his position without a second thought for the place or its inhabitants I have absolutely no connection with.

Why the fk is he having another child when he's 89?!?!

If he's incredibly lucky, they'll be a teenager when he dies. Why would you do that to your own child?

Apologies if this is ancient history, I don't follow F1

And he has a 65 year old daughter. That one surprised me, I thought his only offspring were the spoilt brats.

A sister who's a pensioner.

Can you imagine Ecclestone thinking about flying back into the UK...

"But, sir, if we fly into London you might get a £100 fixed penalty each for breaking lock down."

"Undred facking quid!? Set the satnav to Switzerland Arry, we aren't risking that!"

Through work, I once had the experience of plane travel from the point of view of a very high net worth (or as we said, not just rich, fcensoredk off rich) individual.

In his office in St James', it was about quarter past one when he checked his watch and said "better get going, plane is meant to leave at 2".

Down in the lift, chauffeur to City airport waiting. Accessed the airport via an anonymous (but fully checked) back entrance - the people on duty obviously knew who my client or the driver were and waved us through with a quick glance.

Car pulled up at the steps of a private jet, got on board and it left about 5 mins later. Same on the way home, no passport or security/customs checks either side.

Different world at that level.

He always gobbed off about favouring strong man leaders but I guess the idiot in charge of brazil was too much for him at his age.
I would have left for Switzerland months ago myself.
The holy sprog should have a great life regardless of wether they know him so good luck to them.

I doubt he was stepping over dead bodies on his way to the grocery store. Although I can confirm that experiencing the pandemic in a third world Latin American country is a little bit disconcerting. You are very aware that there are multitudes of less well-off people very angry at losing their incomes, life is a bit cheaper, and social unrest is being locked down as well as the virus. We have had tanks on the streets and some looting. As soon as lockdown is over I am expecting a huge increase in robberies. Maybe that is what Bernie was really fleeing from.
