Furlough Fraud
Discussion
Watching the news this morning a business owner said he has made the job safe yet people on furlough said they don't want to come back, he called it furlough fraud.. I also know a manufacturing company in same position. I thought furlough was to protect jobs, if there are jobs how can people still stay on fuirlough?
My mothers company is having similar problems. They've introduced all the government safety recommendations, but there's still a few people that "don't feel safe", in other words, want to continue watching Netflix for a few months.
I've told her it now has to be a case of return to work, or leave the company.

It's not up to employees if they are furloughed or not. The business decides.
True, but there are a lot of people playing the 'I'm too scared' or 'I'm vulnerable' or 'Its not safe' cards, and putting obstacles in the way of going back to work. No doubt with the support of various unions or whatever. For a lot of companies they are getting close to the 45 day cut off before they have to start paying 20% of the wages or make the staff redundant. Expect to hear a lot of people getting let go in the next couple of weeks.
Any employee who has been working from home succesfully and requests that they keep doing that until they feel safer going into the office has IMO a good point and the employers should listen and try to respect that.
People on Furlough should be going back to work when their employer asks them to, no ifs or buts.
There is a middle ground to that though, what if they are on Furlough, the employer wants them to start work again in the office but they are perfectly capable of working from home?

However, if they say wear a mask and come back, then off i go.

Difficult times ahead indeed.

I can see this being a real issue. I would imagine companies have to be incredibly careful around following government guidelines, you can get in enough hotwater if someone doesn't have an ergonomic office chair so I could see it being a lot worse if someone dies from Covid-19 that they contracted on site. For a lot of companies they are getting close to the 45 day cut off before they have to start paying 20% of the wages or make the staff redundant. it was pimlico plumbing, yes he is a bit of an idiot.
I thought all his staff were self employed? I'm sure there was a big court case around it a few years ago? I know they all earn a fortune anyway. His stance on it is pretty clear
The furlough scheme is meant to protect businesses and people, but the concern is its being abused and we have first-hand experience with employees taking the piss.
...
Furlough, in some instances, has been used as an extended paid holiday, and quite frankly they can stay off for good – and that’s a promise, not a threat!

Its an interesting topic and a thread I hope does not descend into calling people work shy etc. Genuinely interested in how this is going to be managed nationally.
As controversial as it is, even if the work site is safe, people might need to commute by public transport. I would not want people to feel forced to do something they are not comfortable doing through fear of losing their jobs. Behind each employee might be an elderly relative, or someone imuno-compromised, etc. Then there is the legal grey area if they do get ill going to the work site. Its tricky.
Having had tens of thousands of people out not socially distancing over the last few days, which was helpful, I think we also now have a 2 or 3 week wait and see situation now.
