£200,000 wow.

Good for them though.

Usually don’t agree with compensation culture but the way they were treated was awful - so good for them. Just reading the article and saw this and couldn’t help but laugh - “ and police have said that some reported drone sightings may have been Sussex Police’s own craft.” Followed by “ This (their arrest) was despite the fact they did not possess any drones and had been at work during the reported sightings.” Jesus wept.

Bit of a non-apology.

Odd to get it so wrong when it was something that was pre-planned (as opposed to a spontaneous) arrest.

Would be interesting to see the info that led to the decisions.

To be fair that may have only been established after the fact.

Sometimes you need a 'devil's advocate' in the room.

I knew of some commanders who will have someone to play just that role rather than let the momentum of the team, who are all in the same direction, take over.

I'm sure this wouldnt have taken 36 hours isolated from each other though.

If they didn’t own any drones it makes you wonder what evidence they had to suspect them in the first place.

So they have admitted in public that their own officer ‘crafted’ (a.k.a made up) ‘some’ of the sightings?

Did someone need overtime or was a promotion needing a justification?!

Could Gatwick’s insurers now go after them for extended loss of business etc?

Dreadful.

36hours probably on anti terrorism charges and the stress.

200k well and truly deserved.

Yes if that's what they received in compensation. Headline figure for the Post office workers was £57 million. Actual figure was £12 million after legal fees!

Won't that approach cost the police absolute fortunes in payouts for false arrest though, I thought you needed at least a bit of evidence before you pull someone in not just drag a randomer off the street to see if he or she has done anything wrong.

£200,000 for 36 hrs.

I've been under house arrest for the last 3 months and I've also done nothing wrong!
How much compensation can I expect?

What have to read to come to that conclusion?

There needs to be reasonable grounds to suspect and a necessity.

If that's the case then an arrest is fine regardless of what happens later.

The next aspect is the continued detention needs to be reviewed and justified.

The point I am making about those two aspects is one may not be known until a search is carried out and the other until interview.

In terms of going to court, it may well be the case it'll cost the police whether they'd win or lose so out of court is an easier way to deal with it. Alternatively, the police's legal team may have assessed they'd have most likely lost at court.

Regardless of the specifics, it looks poor.

One would think they if they were willing to pay out 200,000 they must accept the original reason for arrest or the reason to keep them was significantly flawed.

More like what have I mis-read to come to that conclusion.

I read the article as the sightings were of their own craft (i.e making) rather than craft (aircraft).

Understood.

That'd be far creative for the language of a police statement!

Surrey news reporting it as £55k payout, probably what they actually received after legal fees.

I don't care either way but other responses on this thread have surprised me a bit. Since it's PH I'd have expected people to be saying "How did they lose £200k because of what happened?"
