This is interesting, and probably the start of many slavery era companies admitting they did wrong.

The good news is that those that are descendents or affected by other forms of slavery (Barbary / Slavs / Arab / Ottoman etc) can now take the offending companies / governments to court and air their grievances.

Greene King brewery owned by a multi billionaire from Hong Kong, doubt he expected or envisaged a re-emergence of G.K. involvement within the slavery World of the 1800’s. Appears he has already authorised a pay off and avoid prolonged aggravation emanating from the issue with possible damaging effects to the brand.

That is good news. It's important that good companies are held to account for what previous unrelated owners did in line with the law over a hundred years ago.

edit: and if you think otherwise you're a racist, so there.

Surely Lloyds and Greene Kings should be able to sue the government for having set those laws in the first place that allowed them to partake in the slave trade. Think how triggering it must be for Lloyds execs to find out that they have inadvertently caused all that angst by only following government regulations at the time.

Where do I sign up? My people were enslaved by the Romans back in the day.

Can't wait for The Guardian to start paying reparations for their support of the Confederacy in the Civil War

Exactly, when is the Roman empire (the Italians?) being bought to Book?

I reckon we'd be better off going after the Vikings, the Scandinavians have loads more spare money than the Italians.

And then they made a bloody tapestry about it. That should not be on public display!

Paying compo for something from hundreds of years back? FFS virtue signalling and a bit of money wringing by some descendants

I take issue at the English for enslaving my nation (Scotland) even though my family have not lived there for generations and actually today directly benefit from said nations wealth based on its past.

HSBC have strong slavery links, and there are families in London now with historical involvement and family wealth. David Cameron anyone? How far do people want to take this.

Yes! You should definitely take them to court / create your own movement, gain some traction and get your reparations. Fairness for all.

Hope you weren't expecting someone to do it on your behalf, you are affected by what the Romans / Vikings / Scandinavians did right?

Don't forget Barbary / Slave / Ottomon / Arab slavery too. Make sure you hold them all to account.

Coming back to what is happening right now, it's good these companies are recognising their links to slavery in the past.

I recently had a DNA test done (for fun) to find out my ethnic origins (this was before BLM). It turns out that I am 79.7% Scots, Welsh and Irish, 11.9% Baltic, 6.9% Scandanavian - and 1.5% Italian which I assume will be Roman.

How much do I owe you?

Yep, That about sums it up.

If nothing else, it's a chilling demonstration of how 'activists' in the media can create/shape a narrative using a very unfortunate situation.

The levels of virtue signalling on display are nauseating.

This. It's been mentioned in other threads about other slavery that existed - Barbary / Slav / Ottomon / Arabs etc, and whoever is affected should take it all the way till they are satisfied.
