Hundreds of elephants have died in Botswana, cause unknown but not thought to be poaching:

Bit of a mystery and not a happy one when you're trying to conserve a species.

Lots of things don’t matter any more now due to Covid.
Rioting is a pastime, plastic pollution is through the roof, Endangered species being killled wholesale etc

The list goes on.

I seem to remember a story very similar to this a couple of years ago?

if it's anthrax the timing seems a bit out of kilter with previous outbreaks elsewhere. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Culture---conf... although further reading suggests that a lot of the carcasses have only recently been discovered after they started looking further afield once the problem became known.

Yep, spent a day with rescue elephants in Thailand in 2017, it was the end of the season and only 5 of us were visiting, for such a huge and imposing animal they were so gentle, it was such a fantastic experience that both myself and the wife will never forget, such an awesome animal.
