With the government about to start running adverts covering the changes from 31st December it's worthwhile collating these so that we can all be prepared.

Not a political thread, I want to collate changes and practical steps to be taken to mitigate

As far as I can see, three large groups of changes to consider.

1. Britons intending to travel to Europe should ensure their passports are valid for a specific period, they have comprehensive travel insurance, and they check their mobile phone roaming policy.

2. People travelling to Europe from the UK with pets should contact a vet at least four months before their trip.

3. Businesses planning to export or import to or from the EU should ensure they have registered with the relevant customs authority. I'm not sure what sort of additional "red tape" this will entail?

Setting aside the issue re pets, which I know will be huge for some, the biggest change that could catch out some is that the EHIC cards will no longer be valid so everyone will need to have travel insurance in place, including cover for any underlying medical conditions.

Will be watching how mobile phone companies respond.

What else needs to be considered?

Medical insurance isn't motor insurance. You don't have to have it.

And a lot of people signed up to the likes of BUPA may already have it, to varying extent.

It's more accurate to say check your medical insurance position rather than you have to go and get medical insurance.

But you're daft if you travel abroad without make sure you've got cover in place. I've never relied on just an EHIC when travelling in Europe anyway - that doesn't cover repatriation, for example.

There's a thread already running:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

It would have been easier to just add your contribution to that one.

You don't understand. Heli has important political points to score, and he'll get much more exposure to his cause with his own thread, rather than just simply contributing to somebody else's ongoing thread.

Heli; carry on. I want to hear what points you've got to make on this subject.

Very keen on a non-political thread to collate and share information, apologies if this was not clear in my original post.

If the disappearance of the EHIC catches someone out then they really have not been paying attention.
