Fascinating and alarming article looking at projected population changes. Population of Italy fofecast to more than halve as is Japan. Immigration is considered the only realistic way to stem this problem.

And there's me thinking world population is growing

https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/

I think we should be more worried about the population explosion (to use news emotive language)

Prof Christopher Murray told the BBC:
"I think it's incredibly hard to think this through and recognise how big a thing this is; it's extraordinary, we'll have to reorganise societies."

No st Sherlock?

So we won’t have to reorganise societies if the rapid growth continues?

At least this way climate change will be less of a worry, if of course it’s anything like an accurate prediction.

I think the view represented in the article is very one sided. If populations do fall in the west I can see technology developing by 2100 to compensate. I don't see the likes of Chad and Burundi becoming economic powerhouses because they have more people.

Also, not sure they have asked the population of Italy, Japan, Spain etc. if they agree with the idea of mass immigration from poorer countries.

This has been known for quite some time and we in the UK had several ways of countering a falling birth rate but unfortunately populist politicians bamboozled a gullible and frightened population into seeing immigration as the enemy.

It's a very BBC take on the issue.

Exactly, the Government are currently threatening to change the guidance on working at home simply because no one is spending money at Greggs at the moment and where will all these people work if no one wastes their money at Greggs?

Continuing the ages old trend of tech development to reduce the demand for labour seems like something that should be baked into this sort of analysis.

I've not read the article, but do they trot out the usual examples of office cleaners and fruit pickers for a world where offices are a niche endeavor and robots are happy picking strawberries?

Migration doesn’t work when the birth rate continues to fall globally.

The populations goes from a pyramid to an inverted pyramid and the base cannot support the top.

Japan’s population will drop nearly 50%.

Great for the environment but for society and the human race ...

You genuinely believe that 17.4 million people were bamboozled and gullible?
IIRC 500,000 - 800,000 unemployed just by voting for Brexit.
We were all going to lose our houses.
etc

All the Brexiteers I know have no issue with controlled migration.

I'm sure you will try and explain that the trend of the graph and figures below are not just sustainable, but desirable too.

Why is a reducing population deemed a bad thing ?

There will be several difficult years as the economy shrinks and the country tries to adjust, but will eventually come out of the other side. I cant see that countries will just collapse into dust bowls.

Supporting immigration of what would mainly be unskilled uneducated labor, will in itself cause problems, especially if the high earners are dying off and not producing. If on the other hand we take all the skilled educated workers, what happens to the masses left behind ?

The article actually says that UK population will be not that much different to now although a lot older.

I totally agree that it ignores the advance of automation. It will be a very strange world when populations really do fall significantly though.

They're projecting the population of Italy to fall to 28 million. Imagine what it will be like with all the empty villages and towns. Pretty much unheard of since the black death. Except all the people left behind will be ancient.

Why not? It might mean that immigrant workers have a better bargaining position but there will still be people willing to move countries for better economic prospects.

I'd love you to explain how uncontrolled immigration of hundreds of thousands unskilled, poorly educated people has helped us in any way.

Yes we want certain people / skills which we can get from controlled / targeted immigration

Thieves, rapists, the elderly looking to use the NHS and the lazy signing on - not so much
