I'm seeing reports a bill to protect the NHS against external market forces was defeated last night by an overwhelming vote from the conservative party. If so, what justification could be made for doing this?

Disclosure: I am not left or right wing, just confused about what this means.

I suspect you're referring to the Trade Bill 2019-2021

It's a bill to let government negotiate and sign international trade deals.

There were two amendments put forward (NC8 and 17)

NC8 basically said no trade deal at all if it could affect the NHS in any way - although the wording is so broad it's hard to see how this wouldn't block every trade deal - this was discussed but not voted on

NC17 was similar but more nuanced - this was voted on but rejected

I don't think either were realistic given they explicitly banned any trade deal that could affect the NHS, they didn't just require additional scrutiny.
