Co-op supermarket workers report high levels of abuse from customers while enforcing rules intended to safeguard both staff and customers.

https://inews.co.uk/news/consumer/co-op-supermarke...

Is this the same in all supermarkets?

I run a timber merchants with around a 100 - 200 people per day visiting. We have polite notices up and my staff and I are politely requesting people to use a face covering.

The phrasing has been "Good morning, have you a face covering you could pop on while in the shop?"

I've been told to F*** off. Called a Tw@t, Jobsworth, W@nker. People have stormed out taking photos of our staff who are not required to wear a face coverings. Wheel spinning up the yard etc.

We've had a general down turn of behaviour in recent weeks with people being extremely rude. I worry somewhat that it was the way in which we were asking but changing the phrasing and greeting hasn't had any effect.

Been a sh*t time for all staff of late.

The usual rabble rousers have been encouraging this kind of behaviour, framing being against wearing masks as just another political opinion for their fans to get angry about.

I'm avoiding shops where possible as I CBA with all this face covering nonsense however today I fancied a coffee and the coffee shop is inside a supermarket. I'd say most people had a covering of some sort albeit not all and no one was enforcing the non mask wearers.

No excuse, but life is difficult for many at the moment and all the government appear to want to do is make it worse. The poor shop workers are receiving the short end of the fuse.

My son works in a certain popular DIY chain store and they've been told to ask but not try to enforce it.

IMO masks 4 months in is a waste of time but I'll wear one and would not get upset if told to wear one.

Are you surprised that people get annoyed when they can see staff not wearing a mask but being told they must?

Forget the government/rules as they are clowns. If you think that it's important to wear masks then make everyone wear them unless they have a medical condition stopping them. You are protecting the customers and they are protecting you etc.

You shouldn't have to put up with abuse. It's not right. And I'm not justifying that. But rather than changing the way you ask someone to do something - have a look from an outside perspective and see how it comes across.

If you are like me off the opinion that the whole face mask thing is a bit OTT. So basically if you as the manager don't think its needed to tell staff to put one on - don't tell the customers. You are not the police and it's not your job to enforce the law.

I suspect Joe5y has enough complete planks in stock at the timber yard already - no need for you to audition for the role.

8+ hour shift continuously wearing a face mask vs putting one on whilst nipping into a shop. It's a very minor inconvenience to put one on but that's where we're at right now.

The abuse workers are getting is the exact reason shops such as Sainsbury's aren't enforcing it.

M&S seemed very civil on Saturday. 90% of people wearing masks, the rest presumably have some kind of health reason.

Minimum wage staff being paid to stack shelves or work a cash register should not be expected to play any part in assisting to enforce this IMHO. Just asking for trouble when you see the attitude of a certain subset of people to being politely asked to do anything.

He presented a problem and said he was trying to find a solution. I suggested a solution.

My partner is a pharmacist and has been locumming in a pharmacy where there isn't the room to do any separating for the last few months. She has worn one her whole shift and manages. She has had one or two technicians try and say they didn't want to so said okay I'll close the pharmacy until the company getting another responsible pharmacist - they soon put it on. If they can manage it for 8 plus hours I am sure it's possible. Similarly, the blokes who operate the saws will have a far more onerous mask than the type which is being asked to be worn here... So I'm sure they could manage. The people working in Amazon DC's manage a whole shift doing fairly physical work with one on (and I put one on if I go to their site).

This stuff is neither here nor there for me. I am living in Wales now and don't need to wear one. If they change the rules I will do so. If I ran a business I wouldn't want to antagonize my customers.

Interestingly, in our Sainsbury's virtually all staff were wearing masks. Tannoy was giving messages out saying to be tolerant to customers who may not be wearing masks for health or other reasons. Seemed to work and I'm really anti muzzle wearing. They seemed to have had a think prior.
Nonetheless, there are two things that are sure. This is about more 'DIVISION' and it's working. And more and more and more business for muzzle makers. It's like a business that has boomed overnight. Yet three months ago you didn't need one and couldn't get one. It's all f crackers.

Now, where was I? Ah, getting on with my life. fk masks, if this is going to be the future, gawd help the young.

This is my son today, only reason I know it's him is because I recognise his dog (and the Defender he's in)! Doggie just been sedated (he's at vets).

Whoever thought we'd see the day where it wasn't dogs with a muzzle on but their human counterparts. Sad.

What is all this 'muzzle' rubbish all about? I'm not a fan of masks and very dubious about the actual benefits but really struggle with the level of vitriol on show from certain posters.

Unfortunately some people are just scum.

I would say don't worry about it but that's human nature.

But it's unlikely to be the way you're approaching it.

Some people are just rotten sadly.

I feel a bit more information may sway your opinion.

All staff inside are behind counter to ceiling screens with a separate entrance. Effectively a separate room - think Bank. Any staff serving customers or in the shop wear a mask. The only staff not to wear masks are the ones behind screens that sit some 4m from the counter and at least 3m from each other. Yard staff remove them when driving forklifts or not serving.

I also think you have misunderstood. Not once have I attempted to enforce the law, as is my duty of care for staff and other customers alike I have asked if they have one that can use, if not I have ones available to keep. If they refuse then unfortunately there is little I can do.

The abuse I and staff have received has been an abrasive retort to being challenged and they have quickly flown off the handle without comeback.

Face facts - your typical customer is a manchild having a tantrum in public.
