And for those who want to go down nostalgia lane here is the entire archive of yearly catalogues going back to 1974.

Just had a look at the 1986, 87 catalogue and around page 289 are transformers Jet Fire and Metroplex, both I had as a child though different Xmas presents I think. £24.99 I suspect was hell of a lot of cash back then.

I received Metroplex for Christmas, remember being vaguely unimpressed, particularly as my dad kept calling it a 'complex' as I didn't really understand what that meant. It was the Arndale Centre of Transformers.

They sometimes used to have a pallett of them outside their shop in our High Street. Some barely made 30ft before being discarded - probably because someone cba to lug it any further.

To paraphrase HL Mencken, Argos and its ilk are further proof that nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the buying public. Date Ramsey hit the nail on the head, we buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't know. A brilliant business plan, at one point only the bible was in more British homes!! The precursor to online as we know it?

Argos still do the usual range of crappy watches. They're either over priced Casio which you can buy cheaper on Amazon etc, or the pretend 'Fila' variety. I'm amazed they're still around, what with everything else online 24/7....
Great memories in that catalogue link though!!

You could give 1 to your kids in November and tell them to pick out what they wanted off santa and it would keep them occupied for hours

When I was a teen I would be disappointed when a Argos catalogue would show up on our coffee table and not a Kay's or Littlewoods one.

Although I would look at toys when the parents were in the room, once they were gone it would be straight to the women's underwear section to check out the women.

Probably my first exposure to rude bits lol

I never think of it as badly priced at all, re watches last 4 I have bought have all been at an airport (casio not rolex) but I assume argos is the same price. Its very convenient as long as you remember YGWYPF.

Could backfire. Although online searches will take you directly to what you want (or maybe not with Argos), physically looking through a catalogue will cause people to stop and look at many other items and possibly buy something additional to the item they want.
