Major Unrest in Belarus
Discussion
Surprised to see nothing in here or on the BBC website.

Very little in the way of condemnation from the UK or USA of yet. Will be interesting to see how things pan out over the coming days, does he retain power (likely by trading alot of independence to Putin) or is there a revolution?
It does put things in perspective, whilst we can complain about politicians lying and using underhand tactics to win, atleast we are heard and not intimidated into submission. (yet...)

I would suggest to read this article, it is much shorter version of the Russian one, but gives you a little perspective:

I spend a lot of time in Minsk as we have family there. It actually has potential to be a decent country if they get a decent leader in and open the borders.
Belarussians are generally really nice people, if a little grumpy, hard working and highly educated. A family member got 97% in her maths degree in the UK because she had been studying UK degree levels maths since the age of 14.
Nobody under 40 in Minsk has a nice word to say about this crackpot dictator. Generally though there is an air of grudging acceptance, as if you put your head over the parapet you risk getting thrown in prison for a few years.
Really hope he gets overthrown though.

I can't believe they would be so stupid to claim 80+% of the vote when there was such popular support for the opposition. At least make the vote rigging plausible.
Been reading alot of belrussians on twitter, rumor has it he picks a winning percentage, but the minions below 'pad' it to make sure, the mini ones below that 'pad' it too and so and so on, until you get ridiculous results like this. Putins are usually similarI'm just surprised anyone is surprised.
The reasons dictators keep control of the apparatuses of power (media, police, courts) is because that is how they maintain control.
See countless examples of how young, principled, unarmed protestors get on against armed, organised and unaccountable security forces.
I'm trying to think what tends to tip the balance...?
Did Ukraine not have a successful revolution? Surely one or two African countries have been able to remove dictatorships? (Maybe one of the sudans?)
After Ukraine I can we why the west is leaving well alone....It's right on Russia's doorstep, and they've shown they're not averse to playing silly buggers (see Georgia and Ukraine for illegal invasions)

Yes, they've obviously reported it. But absolutely nothing on the home page. Lots of things about trans bakewell tarts and other news stories, but not this. Poor editorial choice imo.
Do you want to change the title of the thread to BBC's poor editorial decisions?
It seems that someone has taken it upon themselves to track the changes to the BBC news homepage over time.
This link is to a copy of the page the first time the story appeared; some time around 11:30pm UTC on 9 August. It was the top story.
https://dracos.co.uk/made/bbc-news-archive/2020/08...
It was reduced in prominence some time around 02:35 UTC on 10 August. Still front page, smaller photo.

It was reduced in prominence again around 06:45 UTC on 10 August. Still front page, headline only.

It fell off the front page around 15:45 UTC on 10 August.

Will it depend on whether Putin decides to stand behind him?
Watching the news and it appears that he may we’ll be on his way out. Belorussians seem to be directing their ire solely at El Presidente himself rather than the system per se so a non-bonkers president may well be able to keep the status quo.

One can only hope for a peaceful end to the tyranny.
Even without cheating, the First Past The Post electoral system can give whopping majorities to the ruling party.
In Europe, Belarus, France and UK are the only ones to use this. The other 40 countries use some form of Proportional Representation. So Britain and France can't suggest that Belarus drop the 'winner takes all' approach.
