The Secret Barrister
Discussion
This is a twitter account mainly pertaining to criminal law. However, of late he/she has become an extremely popular commentator on matters of politics. In fact, I’d say they were now mainly a political commentator. I find them to be very left wing, anti-Tory etc. Just wondered what everyone’s opinions were on this person and their views?
Given that the Tories are in power they are the ones making decisions. Not much Labour can do that can be legally challenged. Add in to that the fact that the Tory party has shown a complete contempt for the law, it is hardly a surprise that a legal commentator has lots to talk about.
The (first) book was an excellent eye-opener. I read it not too distant in time from Adam Kay's look at the medical profession in the UK and both offer humour and insight to a high and thought-provoking degree. Both can bring you to tears.
I don't think either could be read in a vacuum.
SB's points will alight on your thought process quite differently depending upon your prevailing views, but I think the message is the same.
I haven't partaken contemporaneously, but the taking apart of film plots in a Twitterthon seems like a hilarious example that SB is motivated by spreading information... it would be a shame if the political tail wagged the truth dog, granted... and I don't see the reality quite as (badly as) the OP reads it, myself

I've followed the SB for a long time and he/she (myself and a few others think She) simply tells it as it is.
SB is not left wing, they tend to stay away from any political position. It probably sounds left wing to some because "she" is writing about her experiences in a system that's been managed by a Conservative government for over 10 years, and often rails against the more right wing press which seems to willingly misrepresent the realities - legal aid being one particular issue.
I would expect SB to be equally critical of a Labour government.
Don’t find him/her particularly left wing but he/she does rail about the government and how they’ve eviscerated the justice system almost to the point of collapse which, when you read the book, is a very fair comment.
I feel SB would be as equally critical of Labour if they’d had been in government and treated the legal system as the Tories have. SB wants good law and a well run and funded legal system and is highly critical of ministers who are clearly out of their depth but push ahead with ill thought out reforms (Chris Grayling and now Suella Braverman (sp?) in particular come in for harsh criticism but it’s warranted when you read a bit further).
One thing though, after reading the book you’ll want to steer well clear of getting caught up in the justice system as it’s currently a clusterf
k of epic proportions and has the potential to destroy you both mentally and financially through no particular fault of your own.

I think Twitter is bad for everyone's mental health and should be avoided.loafer123 said:

Far to common for people dismiss valid points because the persons perceived political leanings.
NP&E is littered with threads that are derailed from good debate about points because sometimes people find it easier to try to discredit the person making the point.
