Discussion
i was quite astonished to be honest the numbers obviously don't add up but how do we feel about this use of tax payers cash ?

Why is the buying of alcohol to give to alcoholics any different from buying methadone for drug addicts?
because methadone is NOT heroin !!! it's a treatment widely accepted to actually help no ? booze is a killer is methadone ?
As for your other comment. there will always be gaps in the system. That is how a lot of homeless people ended up homeless in the first place.

As already pointed out to you, if an alcoholic suddenly doesn't get their fix, they can die. Methodone is used to replace heroin. There is little else a council could give an alcoholic.

if an alcoholic keeps drinking they will die, oh yes there just gaps in the system. As for your other comment. there will always be gaps in the system. That is how a lot of homeless people ended up homeless in the first place.

k me ! The outrage on here is quite something to behold.
So the council spent £120 on alcohol for people who were isolating during lockdown based on medical advice and to avoid the risk of dying from alcohol withdrawal.
Some of you lot need to get a grip. You'll drown in your own froth if you're not careful.

I’m inclined to agree. It may look bad with hindsight, in the paper etc, but unlikely it was a decision made frivolously and in what are somewhat unusual circumstances ?

Homelessness is a complex problem, as is alcoholism. And indeed we have a rather complex situation with this pandemic. Put it all together and I can see hindsight maybe making things look clearer than they were at the time.

?? It is the other way round, for some people they die if they stop drinking - happened to a colleague of mine. Some alcoholics' brains produce extra serotonin to compensate for the alcohol. When the alcohol is removed 'cold turkey', this means excess serotonin, which fries the brain. I thought there were prescription drugs they can give to alcoholics to stop the dangerous alcohol withdrawal symptoms?
Probably more expensive than just giving them booze though.
Housing them and giving them addiction treatment should be the preferred option rather than the short term idea of more booze.

i have two single mums on my street they get zero help from the "council". why ?
You'd need to ask them that, not us, surely?
Masses of 'help' for women with kids, kids are pretty much the ultimate guarantee of it. If they're not getting any, there must be a very good reason.

Benzos are used for alcohol withdrawal, but that's just inviting further problems.Probably more expensive than just giving them booze though.

What outrage? It's just the OP who's outraged, everyone else seems fairly OK with it unless there are some deleted posts I missed?

Unless I'm getting the wrong end of the stick "more than £120" does not mean 1000s, or Millions, but about £120.01 - £125.00 ish. On homeless unfortunates who clearly needed it.
Personally, looking at the apostrophes in the thread title, I'm more outraged at the public money evidently squandered on the OP's education.
