Watching the debates about the elections in the States I noticed a lot has been said about the age of the candidates, even the bastion of political correctness has pointed out how old the candidetes are compared to the average age of the population.

What difference does age make, you wouldn't look at the population and say the president must be white because the majority of the population is white. Surely the ability to do the job is more important?

I would have thought age would be an issue when linked to fitness. Travelling around the world, phone calls at all hours, long meetings etc. I struggle concentrating in a meeting past 5.30pm let alone one at 11pm but I am an early starter.

I would think 45-65 is probably the prime age, old enough for experience and still fit.

(Will probably get shot down now by 70+ running marathons but talking on average)

I think both these reasons are good ones althogh one should surely judge the individual rather then the group.

However the reasons put forward for a younger president is one of demographics not physical fitness

If you can’t see that someone of 82 (at the end of the first term) won’t be at the peak of their mental acuity then there isn’t much more that I can say...

The fact that that person will be holding down the most important job in the world is kind of a big deal.
You’re somewhat conflating these comments with being mean to kind old Doreen volunteering at the local charity shop. It’s nothing of the sort and is a material consideration, and worthy of comment.

Exactly. My mum is 78 and routinely nods off in front of the TV. I couldn’t imagine her holding down what should be one of the most high pressure jobs in the world.

Surely 55-65 is the optimum age range? Loads of experience but not so old as to be knackered.

Yes well because your mum is like that it is obvious everyone else is at that age

Amazes me that the USA accepts that people will be taking on the most important job in the world, at an age where they should be watching Wheel of Fortune with a cocoa and in bed by 20:30.

He'll be 78 when he takes power. That's insane! I imagine people are at their mental peak around 30 to 55 - and the ideal age for a candidate is probably towards the upper end of that range (to benefit from their additional experience).

He seems like a very healthy 78 year old...but he's still a 78 year old. Still, he'll pass the torch to Kamala half-way through the first term.

Perhaps he'll be properly Presidential and not actually do that much himself - bit of waving etc?

Trump and Biden are both older than Obama, Bush and Clinton. Clinton was president 27 years ago!

They are both far too old.

Now I don't wish to be rude about your mum, but answer this honestly. Could you imagine her holding down what should be one of the most high pressure jobs in the world, when she was 48?

Perhaps had your mum been a high flying MP/cabinet minister for the last 40 years, you might be able to imagine her doing that job at 78.

Having said that, it is a physically demanding job, as well as mentally taxing, and I should think you'd have to be a pretty fit 78 y/o to be embarking on it. But maybe Biden is. He's certainly in better physical shape than Trump.

Age? It's all in the mind. I don't feel any different to when I was 20. That was over 50 yrs ago. Many of the people I see half my age couldn't get across a zebra crossing quicker than me. But then I don't eat ste fast food nor ste sugar-free crap drinks etc.

Biden is 20 yrs younger than this Englishman who turned 97 in August.
I don't know many half this guy's age who could do this, in fact, the best half his age could do today is float on the surface as they are so obese.
Worth watching if you have ageist views.

Not with her temper no!!

I thought Trump was too old too btw. I'm not singling Biden out here, I'm just surprised the system has delivered two guys at this late stage of their lives.
