All those people who were grown ups on TV when you were a lad have had their time.

Used to love the ribbing Eric Morecambe gave him, very good natured of him to put up with it.

I can just imagine Eric greeting him at the pearly gates.

"The devil has all the best tunes, Des. That's why you're up here!"

Saw a repeat of Would I Lie To You yesterday and he was on it. Very surprised to read the news this morning, and I thought he was a lot younger than 88.

Seems he took a fall last week, but condition went downhill quite quickly, I’ve known two people, both in their nineties who had relatively minor falls at home who passed within a week whilst seeming to be recovering, both from complications due to blood clots, seems to be an issue with age.
Regardless of the how though.....

Lost another entertainment legend in my eyes, his parts on Morecambe and Wise were just brilliant.
For me, in my fifties, he was up there with Forsyth, Wogan and Tarbuck as part of TV entertainment.

RIP.

Falls are terrible for the elderly- around 5,000 OAPs die every ear as a result of a fall and many thousands more suffer serious injury. Many of these could be avoided, especially through house design and / or modifications. Doesn’t get enough media coverage.

Anyway RIP Des. Proper old school entertainer. He was the butt of many jokes but always seemed to take it well.

Just asked my missus about this (she’s a nurse and works in care homes) and she said this is true. They also lose confidence after a fall and tend to stay in bed which causes other issues that lead to illnesses that they sadly succumb to. Very sad topic.

yes

Many of the patients my wife sees in A&E are elderly who’ve fallen. It seems that a big issue is that they’re rarely found until the following morning if it happened overnight ( this includes care homes).

Very sad news, an entertainer from the last gasp of Music Hall, got his toe in the door of TV in the 60's , plus a successful singing career.

A very likeable chap by all accounts.

RIP Des.

Another entertainer gone, the likes of Des,Bob and Bruce won’t be seen again as presenters just present these days and that’s all they seem to do.

There are still a few multi-talented presenters - Bradley Walsh comes to mind - bluecoat/comedian, then presenter and actor, and he has released albums.

A legend if only for the look of terror on his face when Stan Boardman was telling the "Fighter pilots story".

For those who have never seen it, go look it up and watch it.

I remember that well. I do wonder how many people under about 45 will get it though unless they were aircraft or war geeks?

My mum,god rest her soul, hated the F word and even she was crying with laughter at that, as was Des.
One of the funniest things on tv ever..... ironic that it ruined Stan's career
