Just been announced on BBC Radio 5 - awaiting confirmation.

Saw him play one of his first games for Argenitina - in a friendly against Ireland at Landsdowne Road in 1980. It was obvious he was a bit special even then.

My view too. Nobody can claim to be "the greatest" sportsman in a particular discipline when they aren't very sporting.

People bleat on about the hand of God, but then came this. What a player. Best ever.

He wasn't the greatest sportsman, just the greatest footballer.

That’s just our British view of sport/football though, the rest of the world see cheating, diving and deception as part of sport, a bit matador almost.

No doubt about it, he was the most naturally gifted player I’ve ever seen in 40+ years.

Find it difficult to be too upset, a cheat, a bad sport a drug user etc. etc.
His antics on the pitch could be both miraculous, but most often he is remembered for the disgraceful behaviour of cheating, diving, getting players sent off, fighting after the whistle, (lest we forget how his tenure at Barca ended!). Drug busts, outburst, arguments with club owners and managers, sacked from most of his clubs, knocked his missus about, threatened her, FFS, people get all misty eyed at his occasional dribbling, in reality, he overall, he was a hell of a dickspalsh.

No - he wasn't. He was a cheat, a cad and a bounder who was quite good at football. I still think George Best and Pelé were both better players and, especially in Pelés case, better men (and sportsmen).

I had no time for Maradonna - no matter what he did on the pitch.
