Will this be the start of a claim for sovereign Chinese territory by the CCP ?

No. Fairly clear cut international agreements on that point. Might they go ahead and colonise it anyway? Yup, but not sure a sampling mission will get them too far down that path.

Except China is not a signatory to that agreement. So far, there is no indication that China is going to make any claims - but they could if they felt like it.

You say "sampling mission", I say "nicking the whole thing one bucketful at a time".

Mark my words, give it a couple of months and they'll have the whole of Mons Rümker bagged up in a warehouse just outside of Shanghai.

That's the plan.

It's been done quite a few times already, but not since 1976.

Official Chinese moon landing pictures from the BBC!

Im convinced.

Seriously, what is that picture about ? Did they land rabbits in spacesuits ?

And the text on it 'to go where no one has gone before' ? I suppose if they mean the third crater on the left maybe, or are they suggesting the US never went ?

I noticed the landing was not live-screened - too high a chance of cocking it up again, but as soon as it landed, all TV programmes were interrupted to bring coverage to the masses.

I bet there were a few staff in their space control area contemplating life in a steel box with political dogma coming through a letter box if they screwed up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_rabbit

In Asian cultures there are folktales about there being a rabbit on the moon. See wiki link. That is probably why there is a cartoon rabbit in a spacesuit.

‘To explore brand new world’ ffs.

You can just about forgive Chinglish on a packet of crisps but you’d think they’d try and get the grammar correct on a worldwide broadcast.
