Also apologies for yet another Covid thread, but I don't this fits in any other related thread.

Apparently there's a new strain of Covid that's super contagious and it appears to have originated in the UK and despite it having been known about for the past 6 weeks or so (presumably around a few weeks longer than that) it is still confined to the South East of the UK.

Other countries are rapidly starting to ban travelers from the UK.

It appears to be a well known fact that viruses mutate over time.

Is it the case that every other mutation has resulted in a more benign virus, or are other countries keeping quiet about their new strains, or is the UK the only country with the ability and desire to identify these mutations (don't think that one's true).

It has also been found in Yorkshire.

Along with the UK, the same mutation of the Covid-19 virus has also been detected in the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia, the WHO told the BBC.

I have a theory that this is simply an excuse for the south east being out of control, when they should have been Tier 3 all along.

While I'm not generally a conspiracy theorist, not a government blamer, it's time they stopped hoping for the best and took the hard decisions early.

As others said - there are plenty of other strains.

There'll be loads of variations by now. The UK one seems notable in that it's materially different in that it's more contagious.
It’s interesting isn’t it how people went apest when Trump referred to the virus as the “China coronavirus” yet we’re seeing no such criticism of the various forms of “UK variant.”

Because there's no evidence (yet) it originated here? It's only becoming more prevalent here in our pile of mutations, it could've been brewed anywhere. The original outbreak source was eventually tracked back to China.

This was my thought also seemed like they put it out there at the same time as putting London into tier 3 and it certainly felt like a good headline to take to avoid admitting they screwed up trying to keep London open.

Its not the government's fault its a new SE specific strain to blame.

According to WHO, we are not alone.
“The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it is in "close contact" with UK officials over the emergence of a new variant of coronavirus.
The new variant is spreading more rapidly than the original version, but it is not believed to be more deadly.
Along with the UK, the same mutation of the Covid-19 virus has also been detected in the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia, the WHO told the BBC.”

But that makes it even stranger.

I'm also wondering about 70%

is this about southerners being more complacent until now and spreading it as a result?

Seems to be widespread over the UK, and "known to the authorities" (and tracked, since 24th September

Also seems to rise and wane at random, rather than being particularly dominant

I read that they think this mutation has come from a patient who died, but maybe one of our resident experts could comment. Apparently it was first identified in September, it does illustrate the constantly changing landscape, just when we start to think we are turning a corner and all that.

AIUI if it follows the usual novel virus trend it will be more infectious but less deadly. The exception (in terms of deaths) was the Spanish flu of 1918, but there were obvious socio economic reasons for that.

Which part of the vaccine not being instantly available for every person that is particularly susceptible do you not understand. There are only so many people that can drive the available supply of vaccine into people. Added to the need for two doses, any level of useful immunity due to the vaccine will not be possible until end February at the earliest. Tier 4 is required because of the infection level, and the growth rate today - nobly in February.

The government are struggling to manage a pandemic, pretty much every single change to restrictions has leaked ahead of time and they can't even save an Excel spreadsheet properly.

What makes anything think they are then somehow competent enough to concoct a lie that would presumably require many people (including scientists) to either be in on it or be duped? That's what I don't get with conspiracy theorists, they often give government agencies an awful lot of credit for being able to do some pretty spectacular things.

The government, throughout the pandemic, has routinely - almost every weekend - leaked what is likely to happen, through the Mail and the Telegrsph, to test how it or received, before some cabinet schmuk being put up for Matt on Sunday morning to neither confirm nor deny. And that is the problem - public messaging has been muddled, they’ve tried to do things that will be popular. The trouble is, the measures required are of popular. Messaging is critical, to convince enough people to make the required modifications to their behaviour - this is one of the biggest failings of the government in handling the situation.

Whilst also endlessly quoting the Office of National Statistics data as if that wouldn’t have been ‘got at’ in a real conspiracy to match the story.

I wonder if the mass testing for schools had anything to do with this? I can see it being a big problem in places like schools if it spreads so easily.
