In situation like this what’s the reason for not just cordoning off the entrances, letting no-one and nothing down, and waiting for the protestors to come up?

I was going to suggest chucking some stink bombs down there, but on reflection, would most likely make them feel more at home.

HS2 are endangering our lives yet again. They need to help us make the tunnel safe. They have made this an urgent situation. We haven’t got the air supply.”
laugh

So they are supposed to make the protestors tunnel safe for them.

This is the irritating and banal aspect of this; HS2 is green in the macro sense, it will free up the existing rail network to carry much more freight and low speed passenger traffic which can take a lot of traffic off roads, potentially over 100% increase in capacity at some bottlenecks. This is green whatever way you cut it, so I have to conclude the tunnel rats here are either terminally deluded or are the kind of fundamentalist greens who pine for agrarian subsistence/zero growth/mass-death through starvation 'because it's good for the planet'.

Going to hazzard a guess that most are claiming benefits as I guess these activists usually are,how are they 'actively looking for work' while holed up in a tunnel?

This group are one up from Travellers. They know the system and how to play it.

The HS2 Rebellion group are no longer Stop HS2 supporters they are Extinction Rebellion activists relabelled. They are out to annoy the NET guys and have done well in doing so. They started in Hillingdon, moved to Bucks, went up along the route and then travel back and forth as the main players. Lance Maxey likes to be the main player, there are others that hide off, when the eviction teams come in, they leg it.

How do they afford it, they have “go fund me” pages and there are about 3 or 4 paid “employees” of XR.

My old man worked on the A30 dualling between Exeter and Honiton when Swampy and chums set up camp in some trees and dug tunnels.

I remember him coming home chuckling at one eviction method employed by the bailiffs which was to rig up sodding great sound systems around the trees blasting white noise at the crusties all times of day and night. hehe

See, I think it's all very simple. Legal protests and demonstrations, which have gone through the local authority and plod - well OK. Don't want to stop freedom of speech.

However, illegal protests and demonstrations - anyone copped, get details. If in receipt of any state benefits, Income Support, Job Seekers, Housing Benefit etc etc the benefits get stopped immediately. Goes the same for student loans, maintenance loans/grants.

I would have liked to join many a demo during my lifetime, however I had to go to work ... and pay taxes ...

It'd be a crying shame if there were to be an accident with a cement mixer, and the tunnels got filled with concrete, with swampy and his mates still down there ...

Hang on, I thought protests were currently banned under covid regs. So why aren't plod arresting every single one of them?
