it's specifically for religious face coverings. I think skiing will be fine as will be those wearing masks for COVID biggrin

All the Muslim women I have met wear a headscarf at most.

No doubt they don't like the ISIS/Taliban lot who go in for this sort of thing.

Plus tourists (if we have any)
Plus they are suggesting they go after headscarves and the like

I voted against it. It's a bks and unnecessary change - but it's not law yet. It's a people initiative that is now at the point the government must develop some legislation.

I think it also covers the wearing of masks during political demonstrations to better help identify people, so not just religion. Stats show that hardly any of the Muslims in Switzerland actually wear face coverings anyway, so its more of a political statement. Some leading Swiss Muslims have stated that despite this ban most probably stemming from religious intolerance, they are happy with the ban and think it might even help set free Swiss Muslim women.

Yes those 30 women will now be set free.

Off topic. Have you ever tried to cage a woman?

So they've had a national referendum about banning face coverings in demonstrations? Blimey, it must cost a lot to run Switzerland.

Switzerland will introduce a clause in its constitution to outlaw face coverings, including the Islamic burka and niqab, in public spaces.

In doing so, it will join five other European countries, including neighbours France and Austria, who have already banned such garments in public.

Exceptions to the law will include face coverings for reasons of security, climate, or health – which means protective masks worn against Covid-19 are acceptable. Niqabs and burkas will still be allowed in places of worship.

Why would you have a referendum for something that apparently impacts 30 people?

Middle of a global pandemic and that's your priority? confused

Also banned in certain areas in a number of Muslim countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Uzbekistan.

Funny you say that, because I look at my Swiss tax bill, look at my old UK tax bill compare how the poor, unemployed and elderly are treated in the two countries and the two health care systems, not to mention the quality of the infrastructure and wonder what the hell the UK are spending all the money on!

A poxy pandemic isn‘t going to stop Swiss democracy. I‘d need to check to get a precise answer, but the process to get to the referendum will have been kicked off a couple of years ago. There are generally referendums once a quarter to vote on topics that have been raised at community, cantonal and federal level. Also on the bill for my community yesterday was ending the use of fossil fuels for our village buses!

As already mentioned, it‘s really a bit of a non-issue that has been stirred up by the nationalist Swiss People‘s Party. Similar to the ban on building minarets (in 2008 I think). Prior to the ban there were 4 minarets in the whole country.

It will be interesting to see if it has much of an impact on the tourist industry as we do get a lot of visitors from the Middle East and Asia.

Country's like Marocco ban niqaps and other conservative muslim customs to counter muslim extremism. Turkye was well known for it too pre-Erdogan.

In general since the 70's it's quite typical for muslims/labor migrants coming to Europe (most of them uneducated and coming from rural regions) to change to more conservative practices of the Muslim faith.

The strong social control within their own circle in combination with the low level of education and subsidies from Gulf states and Turkye (to build mosques f.e.) makes them willing victims. Imported conservative Imams spreading their conservative ways in European mosques is another problem. Quite a number of them have been banned over the years.

It is funny, muslim countries ban them to combat extremism, and yet non muslim countries feel they cant ban them, although we also want to combat growing extremism aswell....

We support Saudi style dress, there would uproar on PH if the government to try and ban it, yet we are not supportive of Saudi imams??

I think I prefer it when the elected government decides such sensitive issues,
the great ignorant, reactionary public really cannot be trusted.
